Question for 357Max shooters
« on: December 31, 2010, 07:12:05 AM »
I have a question for all you Maxi gurus. Have any of you been using Barnes X bullets in your Handi's? If so which one? I was looking around and only saw one 357 pistol bullet on Midway @ 140gr and a couple in the 200gr plus range for rifle. I ask because I am getting stationed back in So Cal this summer and have always wanted to do a Maxi Handi. I only want info on Barnes all copper bullets as I wont be able to use lead core bullets in my favorite hog areas.

Any input is most appreciated.

Sorry to hear you're going to the Nazi Republik of Kalifornia.....more tree hugger per square mile...less freedom.  I only shoot cast and jacketed bullets in mine, so I can't help you much on that one, but I do love my Maxi....think about shortening it up.

Wishing you the best on the new assignment.  We're proud of you guys and I wish I could serve again with you.

I am actually from there so it is going home for me. I love being stationed out there but wont retire there. Lots of hunting opportunity's with not many hunters if you do your home work.

I have been thinking a Maxi would be the cats meow for pig hunting but all the good pigs are in the lead ban area. I could use my .308 but long range rifles aren't that necessary for pigs. Large diameter heavy pills like .357, .44, and 45colt work great. Hence my interest in the Max.

Casting lead-free bullets has been discussed in Veral's forum.

Quick I had read that but thanks for the reminder.

It is not a route I would try. Where I will be stationed is out of the condor zone so I can hunt and shoot there with what ever I want. The pigs in the state are unfortunately in the condor zone requiring lead free. Casting lead free solder it looks to much like the real thing. If a game warden checks your ammo he is gonna bust you then there would be the hole hassle of proving that it isn't really lead. Less hassle to buy the certified bullets for hunting since I would more then likely only shoot a 20count a year of them. I would shoot my own cast lead for everything else in the southern end of the state.

Hey Devil Dog,
I have a  box of the 200gr 35cal Barnes "X" bullets made for a rifle cartridge.  My initial, unsubstantiated concern would be for the length of the bullets. Solid copper bullets are longer than the same weight lead core bullets. Twist rates usually refer to the weight of a bullet, but really indicate optimal bullet length. The length of the Barnes bullet's body is nearly 1/8" longer than that of a 200gr Hornady Interlock SP. It may work fine, but also consider the optimal velocity ranges for bullet expansion.

Good luck out their in So Cal. Going to 29 Stumps?

Thanks, Dinny

I seriously don't think the 200gr X or TSX bullets will work well in the Maxi, the lowest velocity they list the older X bullets at in the 358 Win is 2399fps, 2223fps for the TSX, 2200fps would be about the max velocity for 180gr bullets in the Maxi. But maybe some short range penetration testing may be in order to see what kind of terminal performance you'd get at Maxi velocities. But the XPB should work fine, give Barnes an email and ask em, they may even have data for the Maxi!

Tim, you always come up with a great answer.  I don't know how ya do it, but when we're both in rockers on the front porch of The Old Soldier's Home, I'll find out.  Give Kelly a hug from us for the New Year.
