BBs aren't very accurate out past a few yards.

Idk how many sparrows, wrens, barn swallows, black bird, starlings, and mourning dove succumbed to my crossman multi-pump  shooting bb's at up to 50-60 yrds, but it was a lot.

My personal experience with the Red Ryder, I should have worded that a little better.  Robert

Not sure about the higher end guns, but my crossman wasn't rilfed,  but it can in a way be compared in someway to a old muzzleloader shooting round balls to that of one that shoots mini balls, both out of the smooth bore.  I shoot coperheads, but mainly shot regular zinc coated bbs,  I also shot pellets.  Usually I just shot the bb's becuase it had the 15 round magazine on top of the reciever, and another 200 in it,  pellets where one at a time,  killing power seemed to be the same, same with accuracy.

Pellets should be better able to utilize the full potential of the guns rifleing being cylindrical and made of soft lead.  This of course should make them more accurate.  An accuracy test of BB vs. pellet out of a dual ammo gun would be interesting though.

My 1377 is an old one that has a magnet in the bolt to use BBs. Pellets are much more accurate out of it. As you noted, rifling does do its job.

According to an airgun guy I know (owner of a Crosman repair station for 30+ years), the old Crosmans that can shoot BBs often come to him having barrels without much rifling left due to shooting lots of BBs.
