410 slug=bang flop buck
« on: November 24, 2010, 05:09:30 PM »
My son put the smack down on his first buck with his 410. 60 yards and drilled right threw the neck. Had to help him pack it because he was to busy jumping up and down. Sorry about the bad pic I just snapped it off with the phone.

Congrats to your boy on his first buck... and a dandy one at that. ;D
Tell us more about the 410. Is it a regular Pardner? scoped or sights or bead?
details, details, details... we need 'em ya know. :D

Nothing special as far as the gun goes just a good 410 pardner with bead sight and full choke and I think a 24 inch barrel. The slug was a Brenneke. It shoots them well enough to nail a pop can at 35-40 yards easy and thats what he has been practicing on. I set out a few cans at different ranges and have him shoot them from a tree stand for practice. The bullet hit lower in the neck with a clean in and out pass threw. I used my knife to connect them to bleed it. Not sure why it dropped like it did but I can't complain because it never took a step. Was real hesitant on letting him use the 410 but he is pretty good shot and I think that counts more then a bigger gun. But I see a 44 in his future just for the added range. I did not want him to take the shot at 60 but the buck was getting spooky. He just shushed me and let one fly....Brat ;D

What a great looking buck especially for his first.
PROUD REDNECK CONSERVATIVE

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

That's a very nice first deer and a very good shot with a .410.

Congrats! 60 yds with a bead sight to the neck......the kid has better eyes than me (:   Glad we have another hunter in the ranks!  I killed my first hog with a 12ga Topper made in '75 with a rifled slug back in 2000. You never forget how these simple guns work!

I sure was proud of him. For 12 years old he conducted himself great. After he shot he imediatly started loading another round while asking if it hit good. I wont forget that hunt for nothing. Yea he bagged a good one for his first time out. His 13 year old sister took a forked horn so we are set for meat awhile. But after all that cutting up of meat I am ready for a pizza ;)

Remembering to reload is a great skill in itself. On my hog with the Topper the first slug hit just a bit low missing the heart but about took the front leg off. The empty shell would not eject and the hog was wounded. The ejector stuck...talk about bad timing! I was able to force it out, reload, and put another slug between the eyes as he began to charge. I shot from the hip and got lucky Since then I have always kept the ejector oiled and haven't had anymore problems. Great thing about these little shotguns. There aint much in Texas I haven't shot with it feather or fur. Taking it deer hunting in Dec and that will round her out for the H&R "Slam".

And this with a load that 'most' say is no good for deer, especially at that distance.

Yeah, it definately won't get the "Gunwriters Choice" award. But I would use it in a pinch. I received an email from a gunwriter about me using a .38 for my last deer. He wanted to know how it did, his "ballistic" testing didn't jive with what actually happened to the deer and bullet.  The feller' didn't seem to like that much. Haven't heard from him since....... / -:
