22 Hornet on Pardner 12 GA?
« on: December 30, 2010, 10:24:14 AM »
I read through the FAQ and did a search.  It was mentioned vaguely in one of the threads my search turned up, but I wanted to ask outright.  I have a 12 GA Parnder with a case colored frame, so I guess that makes it an SB-1.  According to the threads, FAQ, and my conversation with NEF this morning, the only other barrels they will factory fit to it would be 357 and 44.  I love the look of case coloring, and I'd love to have a 22 hornet.  Can I pick up a used hornet barrel and put it on this frame?  Seems like the pressure would be ok.  I want to keep it as an open-sighted walk-about gun, but might like to improve upon the sights that are on it with a peep-type sight like on the Buffalo guns.  Finally, how much should I expect to pay for the barrel, and where should I look?

Thank you!

Welcome!!

Are for the strength of the frame you would be just fine. Trouble is the 12 Ga could have a large firing pin and not very well suited to the small rifle primer on the hornet.

Yes sir, those case hardened frames are the best. I have a new one from Remington and it's just plain ugly. That should be a class project, to figure out what to do with them.

Welcome Doc!!  ;) +1 on what CW said, I've used my Hornet barrel on two shotgun frames, one did Ok with small rifle primers, just slight cratering with max loads of Lil'gun which provides great velocity at less pressure than other Hornet powders, but the other with pistol primers which are very popular and commonly(Speer #14 and AA) used in the Hornet had severe cratering with the same loads. Use of any of the other Hornet powders will likely result in pierced primers due to their higher pressure, so be aware of the possibility of problems due to the firing pin on the shotgun frame.

I'll second what quick said. I use mine with LIL GUN a 34-35 grain bullet and Rem 6.5 primers,no problem. With the same and H110 the primer flows into the firing pin hole. But if ya reload and use LIL GUN you are fine.

Please don't scold me but I am going to have to ask. I have a case colored Pardner as well in .410. I am dieing to build a 357 Maxi for deer season here in Indiana. Would that work as well since it is a caliber being built on the newer SB-1 frames? Thanks for all your info you guys have gave me.

Happy New Years!!

I read that post and knew I could put a 357 on a SB-1 frame. I just never see much talk about what really a Pardner  frame was. I guess I was looking for a clarifying answer about the Pardner frame. Sorry for the dilemma.

All Pardner single shot shotguns except the 10ga have SB1 frames, see the model numbers, 10ga come on SB2 shotgun frames.  ;)
