Shipping My TC to Fox Ridge
« on: January 03, 2004, 03:46:47 AM »
I got my TC ready to ship to the Custom Shop for the easy open conversion, called them and they told me to ship it via UPS, went to a ship agent and he said he couldn't ship a firearm.  Took it to the post office, insured it and shipped it.  Couldn't track it on their track site.  Called Custom Shop, they couldn't find it after three weeks time.  Went to post office, they couldn't track it or tell whether it was received.
Scared the hell outa' me.  Got the form to claim insurance collection but couldn't file until thirty days from shipping date. Went back to post office and they succeeded in determining that it was delivered.  Still not notified by Fox Ridge that they have it.  Will call them during the week.  It has been eleven days since the post office said they had delivered it.
Fox Ridge says they are on the UPS list to receive firearms. The kid it the brown suit said he thinks, I gotta be a dealer to ship to the factory.

Has anyone information that we (ship agent, UPS Driver, me) are not aware of? Someone said I should have shipped it by FedEx.  Any opinions? My heart can't take this crap again.  I thought I had lost my sweet baby and all three barrels. If I ever have to ship anything by mail again, I'll send it by a courier who has a National Security Agency check.

Doc (yeah, I know it is the "silly season" and I know better than to try to get anything done)
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Unless you are an FFL dealer I believe you violated both USPS regulations and Federal Law by shipping it via USPS. They SHOULD NOT have accepted it. Only FFL dealers can ship via USPS.

You can ship via UPS or FEDEX. UPS will only accept handguns for next day air shipment. Not sure if FEDEX cares as the driver who came to pick up a Taurus I was returning to them would sure have accepted it anyway I wanted it to go but since Taurus was paying I had it go next day air.

It seems that the employees of all three are not all that knowledgeable about shipping firearms and especially handguns. Most of the after market TC folks seem convinced it is OK to ship a frame minus barrel, fore end and grip as a gun part without going thru the hoops needed for a firearm. I dunno. Won't argue it one way or the other.

Doc,
This question comes up from time to time and always generates a flurry of opinions. Here is a link to the BATF firearm shipping FAQ's.

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm

As a non-licensee you can ship out of state to an FFL holder to transfer ownership, but must have a copy of the FFL's license before shipping.  I believe the shipping reg's for a non-licensee to ship a handgun requires overnight air through FedEx.
Cheers,
Dave
Also, Fedex and UPS guidelines from their sites

http://www.fedex.com/us/services/express/termsandconditions/us/firearms.html

Link to US Postal Service regs viewable in PDF fromat http://pe.usps.gov/

Hope this helps!

Yea, it's pretty much a crap shoot when you go to the UPS office to ship one. Like already mentioned, I don't think their employees are very well trained in this area.

My understanding is, you are allowed as the owner of the firearm to ship it to a licensed repair facility without going thru a FFL dealer, and they are allowed to send it back to you.

Using the USPS is a big no-no for handguns, I've always used UPS Next Day.

A couple of months ago I sent a complete gun back to TC for repair, and wound up sending it from a local gun shop.  I live in a rural area of Wisconsin, and the package shipping area in our local hardware store refused to ship it.  UPS has a UPS store in the next town and it refused it also.  UPS agreed to ship it if I delivered it to their facility 30 miles away between the hours of 10 and 11 am and 4 and 5 PM.  My local gun shop was willing to ship it for me, second day air, with no added cost.  TC shipped it back to me direct.

When I asked why all the fooling around the UPS agent I asked told me it was because they had so much theft of handguns by UPS employees.  Kind of a sad state of affairs when so much extra effort on the part of the customer is required to keep things on the up and up.   One of my hunting partners lost a Seko 243 he was UPSing to a shop for a new barrel, so I suppose that could be true.  All I know is that it is a pain, as well as expensive ($37 for me) to ship handguns for repair.

Ain't ignorance great!!!!  Anytime I have sent a frame to T/C I sent it regular UPS and it came back to me that way.  I put Contender or Frame on the UPS slip.  Guess I might be in trouble if that box ever breaks open!  Until I read all this on this forum I would have never guessed I was even doing anything wrong.

DES,
check out the UPS link, it says both sender and reciever must be liscensed.

"Firearms will be transported only between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, and licensed collectors, as defined in the United States Gun Control Act of 1968."

Per UPS page.

From reading the FED EX and UPS links. I think we all should stop using UPS and start sending everything via FED EX  and let UPS know this and why they will not be getting any more of our busness.

Rickyp,
That's what I'm doing. It costs nothing to set up an online account with FedEx(or UPS, for that matter) and have a credit card on file with them. Just schedule online a shipment with FedEx and they will pick up your handgun from you. You still must have receiver's FFL with you in case driver asks to see it. However, with insurance you can expect to pay upwards of $50. For other than handguns and their frames, you can set up an online account with the US Postal service and even print labels with postage paid through your account and just drop off package at post office(or any drop box if small enough). This will cost considerably less to ship. I believe, however, that if you want to purchase insurance through Postal Service that you have to do that(just the ins.) at the counter.
Hope this helps...check out their sites for account info!!!
Cheers,
Dave
