44Mag Handi's

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I missed it.  Do the .44's come D&T plus iron sights, or are they iron only?  Goatwhiskers

Several Years back they came with Iron fore & aft, D&T With scope rail.

Now, no Iron. Just D&T W/ scope rail.

Pre 2008 SB2 44mags came with sights, 2008 and later SB1 don't, 22" accessory barrels only come with scope rails, not drilled and tapped for sights. Talo Trappers  come with an 18¾" barrel w/sights and are drilled and tapped for a scope rail, H&R has some Trapper accessory barrels in stock, or did recently, 44 mag part# FR03634, don't ask the price, I dunno.

I was just looking at Davidson's and they have a 44 Mag Compact/Youth Superlight model listed with a 20" barrel and sights. First time I've seen this configuration and I'm thinking I might add it to my collection.

I saw that a couple months ago when they had none in stock, thought it was a misprint, but Bud's has it in stock now too!

Yes, that's the only way they come, have been since the beginning of the 2008 model year, 357mag also. I just ordered one of the Superlight compact 44mags from Bud's tonight, I'll swap frames with my SB2 44mag and rechambered the Superlight barrel to 444 Marlin for a Superlight big bore!  :)

Obviously it will be safe to shoot all 44 mag loads in the SB1 right?

Will you do the rechamber yourself? Is it as simple as a 357 mag-max?

I believe the barrel breakin load for a 444M Superlight is a 405 grain BTB on top of a compressed load of H110. ::)

it did'nt take too long to do but he has a barrel lathe. it was not done by hand.
he also used 2 different reamers and both had pilots.
the calculations and equipment setup took longer than the ream......

Power equipment only does it faster, not always better; and that set-up time is often a time killer on a machine job.

My apprehension about doing it by hand is from the amount of metal that has to be removed in comparison to the 445SM ream, the 444 is a bit larger in diameter than the 44mag (.470" vs .457") and the pilot probably won't be in the rifling from the start like it is in the shorter rechamber, that could result in a poor chamber.

Besides, I have another project in mind that I might just have Wayne do at the same time, bore and rechamber a 243 Superlight barrel to 375 Whelen Improved!!  :o

Tim,

You almost cost me $201 dollars.  I looked at the Talo 44Mag at Buds.  I can't believe I had the willpower not to buy it, must be sick.

IF you go with the Superlight 375WI you may want to use one of Trotterlg's bolt thrust reducing cartridge designs. ::)

I shoot a stock 45-70 Contender carbine. I had an opportunity to get one for very little money so i picked a caliber that would be interesting. It wakes you up with trapdoor loads. I have not had the interest so far in shooting Marlin level loads in it. The .44 265 grain flat nose Hornady is a tricky component to buy these days. Marlin Owners has a lot wondering if Hornady will ever produce them again. I have a trick to getting them in hunting quantities. But I don't use them for hunting. Go figure.....

You might want to try the 310 gn LWFNGCs from Oregon trail in your 444.  My Illion made barrel likes them a lot.

Thanks BB, even the old overbore 44mag barrels shot 300gr XTPs acceptable with max loads, in the 444 1:38" 300gr work fine as well, it's the 325gr-405gr that are a problem in the slow twist without pushing pressure beyond SAAMI specs which could be done on and SB2 frame with careful load work, it's been done in leverguns.
