Maybe I slept through a lot of it, but it seemed like a pretty tame New Years compared to years past.  There was a house rattling bomb around 10:00 pm, but after that there were just some distant pops and bangs.

It's freaking cold--due to global warming--so folks are probably not spending too much time outdoors.

I live in a Rural area of Pa.Closest little Town is about a mile away. Years gone by, the neighbors was all out blazing away. Now, all the Gunfire comes from the little Town!! I was the only one that shot. I took my little Kel-Tec auto out and emptied the clip in the ground.
On a sad note, I did get the Fiddle out and played The tune East Tennessee Blues. This was to say goodbye to another longtime Fiddle player I grew up with....

Ron/pa:

Nothing wrong with shooting into the ground, but I'll bet most shoot into the air, and that is dangerous to others. and that's what I object to. Maybe next year I'll fire a few arrows into the ground, or a few pellets from the pellet gun. Wouldn't be the same as gunfire somehow. Illegal to fire guns in my neighborhood like that.

Very nice of you to remember your friend musically like that. Very touching.

I shot off about 500 rounds yesterday myself. Into the berm at my local range. Was a great way to celebrate New Years, safe and entertaining. Only thing that got hurt was some paper targets,  a coupla bowling pins and a few dozen clay pigeons that had survived their original onslaught at the trap range. ;D

WE've done it for years.  We shoot into an old mountain of coal refuse.Hundreds of feet high.  Nothing around for miles. It all depends on your background. I wouldn't do it in Times Square.

We had a Bon Fire out on a small lake last night.  At 11:55 I brought out the AR.  I have a blank addaptor left over from my military days.  I loaded five magazines with blanks and let the kids have fun shooting it into the air.  Then we had to reload because some adults wanted to give it a try.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

We didn't shoot last night as it was raining heavily. I couldn't help but think how certain people would delight in setting off big bombs in those party crowds in our big cities. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

We were celebrating at a friends house last night so there was no gun play.  But I generally stay home on New Years Eve and I usually do take out my 12ga pump and fire a three shot volley of bird shot into the air.   However I live out in the boondocks with large open fields to my left and to the rear of my 2 acre property and a good sized wooded area beyond that.  Heck I hunt squirrel, rabbit and dove in season out in my back yard.  :D

Haven't done that in years.  Last time we carted all my guns and my little brothers to my BIL.  Shot off his deck into the ground below.  Picnic table full f guns, shot one, set down pick up another.  Bolts, levers, pumps, revolvers, double.  44 Mag SBH in each hand is fun.

Also, a large coffe can, holes in the side bout an inch up from bottom, little gas, close to 500 bottle rockets and a match is a good way to ring in the new year.  Don't try this one on a dry night.

If it's bird shot (or particularly steel shoot) into the air it's not really that bad.  Anyone who's hunted ducks on a crowded river has probably been pelted a few times by falling shot.  With it's low mass it just doesn't maintain energy well.  By the time it comes back down it doesn't even hurt - just sort of bounces off. That said, shooting into the ground is still likely the preferable thing to do.

Our New Years party was pretty dead.  We were watching the Chick-fil-a Bowl which was pretty depressing if  you were rooting for USC, and then we cooked too much food which put everybody into a sleepy mood.  We were all set - cooler full of beer, few bottles of liquor, margarita mixes - the works.  We didn't touch almost any of it.

I couldn't even guess how many times I've had shot hit me.  Mostly duck hunting but pheasant, quail, and dove hunting as well.  As long as it's up and down it's no big deal, just don't get hit in the eye.
