Which one in the 7600
« on: November 23, 2010, 06:40:16 PM »
Well should I go with the 308Win or the 270Win and why. I will be getting one in the synethic stock. I believe the 308 will do everything the 270 will do but without the recoil. What do you people think?

I dont think you will notice too much difference in the felt recoil of the two rounds.
Especially if you are shooting factory loads with the 150 grain in the 308 and the factory loads with the 130 grain 270 in the 270.
Splitting hairs here ,same with a 30-06 and 150 grain loads and the 30-06 is normally easier to find ammo for any where you go.Just my opppinion here which is what you asked for.Happy Thanksgiving,Craig

Both are very good calibers.   The .270 is a little flatter shooting, but most folks don't buy a 7600 for open plains and long shots (even though it is perfectly adequate for the task).  I would probably defer to the .308, especially if you were going to use it in short to medium range situations just because of the availability of ammo and components.

I love mine in .270. I also own a Wby Vanguard compact in .308, both synthetic have not weighed each, but they have to be close with the .308 slightly heavier.
I have to get down to 110 grns in the .308 to get equal percieved recoil to the .270 130grn to me. If it is for nothing bigger than deer or black bear, I would go .270. If you do happen to get that 300yd shot you'll appreciate the flatter shooting .270.
It would help to know how you intend to use it.

I live in Michigan and the longest shot would be 200 to 250, and most of the shots would be well under 100 yards. Would also use for Black Bear and pigs.

One of the selling points of the short action cartridges, 243, 308 etc., is that you can get them in a rifle with a more compact action. This doesn't hold true with the 7600, this action was designed around the 30-06 and therefore I would choose a cartridge of that length. Also, the 30-06 operates at a little less pressure than the 308 and the 270, I've always felt that a little less pressure is a little easier on the gun.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I'm leaning towards the 308win. The 308 seams to to everything the 270 can. I had a 308[7.62x51] in the Navy and faimiler with it. Also had a 308 in a bolt and liked it in that just not the bolt.

Well I have been checking around for 308win. Not a one in stock, I can find 243,270,30-06. The only way is to order one. I wonder why no 308 in stock?

Possibly because folks like you that want one have bought them all up.  And I'd guess that accrues to the availability of ammunition.  You can get it anywhere.  If any ammo is on sale, .308 will likely be in the mix.  It is a more efficient cartridge than .270 and .30-06 and thus a pound of powder will go further if you reload.

The salesman was trying to sell me the 270. I finely told him that the 308 will do anything the 270 and the 30-06 will without the recoil. He got the message that I don't like recoil when I came do the same thing without it

So how long would you need to wait for the 308 model if you ordered one today?
With the season over in most parts , now would be the time to get your order in and too set it up with swivels and scope .

It depends on if the distributer has one or not anywhere from two weeks until the factory makes there next production run.

Dad,

Don't kid yourself about the recoil. The 308 will kick just as much as the 270. If you want a 308 then buy one but your thinking is flawed about the recoil.

Sluefoot has a good point about the 7600 action length too. They don't make a short action in the pumps. I'd buy the full length cartridge and be happy with it in a 7600 .

IMO Forget about those two and get the 30-06 in the carbine model ;)

Not one person who has posted to your question has given you bad advice.  They are all accurate.

I you were blindfolded and given a 270, 308, and 30-06, I do not think you would ever be able to tell the difference in recoil.

As for accuracy, tragectory, or killing power (whatever that is), at ranges most people use 760-7600 rifles, you would never know the difference.

Since it is almost January and deer season is over or nearly over in most of the country, wait to get the caliber you really want.  Why rush.

I have rifles in all three calibers you mention.  When I go down to 243 or 7-30W  I can tell a difference in recoil.  When I go up to 7mm mag or 300 WSM I can tell a difference in noise and recoil.  With my rifles in 25-06, 270, 280. 280 Ackley, 308 and 30-06 I can not tell any difference, especially in the field.  I don't think you will either.

Don't confuse recoil with flinching.  Both are caused by loud noises and recoil.  Wear hearing protection at the range.  The trigger on your pump rifle will not be light enough to enable you to shoot your best without flinching (because of its heavy pull weight).  If you are really effected by recoil and want to reduce flinch, get a good bolt rifle and lower the trigger weight to slightly below 3lbs.  You will be amazed that your flinch will disappear.  Do you really need a pump rifle?

I'm not rushing into anything. I have shot the 270,30-06 and 308 in bolts. I really like the 308 and everyone has given good advice. Time is on my side I will wait. Still kicking around just keeping the 243 and using the 30-30 for anything bigger than dear {black bear}.

Dad
The 243 is on the light side and could cost you a lost deer , so a heavier calipier in thick bush might some day be a be a help.
Should you also find yourself in bear or moose country the 30 cal and to be able to use the 180 gr. bullet would also be a plus. .It seens in heavy cover a big slow rock thrumps a small fast one every time . (I have got a few deer where the bullet key holed after hitting a branch , but still hit the deer).

I have the 3006 carbine which is a nice short rifle . I would have prefered the 308 myself , then looped the barrel .
I have now ordered a limbsaver recoil pad ( Same # as for all Remington SYN. stock rifles ) which should tone down the felt recoil . As for the extra noise of the carbine - never noticed it .
I did notice that rifles tend to recoil a bit , so as with my 300 WM bolt this gun gets the limbsaver pad .

Triggers on the 742,760 can be worked on, I presume it would be similar with the 7400 and 7600. I reduced the amount of coils on the trigger in both of the 760
I had and the present 742. They are not hair triggers by any means but certainly better then the Stevens 200 and the Marlin triggers I've had.
