My new mortar
« on: January 05, 2011, 03:41:03 AM »
I managed to finish my new 30mm mortar in time for new years eve. The bore is just 30mm and as you can see the barrel is very thick (100mm).
I am firing pyrodex and using 32mm cork's that i hammer in to the barrel. I am using a 35mm film canister as a scale for the amount of powder i am using, the canister has a dia of around 30mm.  Using 1/2 of a photo box produced just a small "poff". I tried an increased the amount to one photo canister, then i am getting a really loud muzzle report. After a while i increased the amount to 1,5 photo canister, and now it's really loud.

30mm seems to be a perfect balance between the amount off powder used and muzzle report. The barrel wall is thicker then the caliber so now i don't have to worry about the amount of powder i am using. The mortar is not completely finnished yet.

Nice. I am still trying to get items together to construct a bb mortar. Did you do your own machining or did you have it done?

A friend of mine have a mill so he did it for me. I bought the steel bar for around 50$ from another machine shop.
