Handi in .219 Donldson-Wasp?
« on: January 06, 2011, 03:39:05 AM »
I bought a new Handi a few years ago in .243 with the 22" bull barrel. I have never been able to get it to shoot to my satisfaction. I now have a tack driving Savage in .243 so I really do not need the Handi. I have a Winchester Highwall in .219 Donaldson-Wasp that shoots great but it is a bench gun and not a field gun. What caliber barrel would be the workable to to turn into a .219DW? As a whole it appears that rimmed cases work better in Handies which the DW is plus it has a reputation for being accurate. Thoughts?

Interesting cartridge. I would think only a Hornet, if that would work??

Good Luck!

gj

I'm just starting to do load work-ups for my new Wasp Handi , it started life as a 1 in 9 twist 22" Hornet barrel , that was the only 22 cal. barrel that the wasp reamer would clean up .

I have an odd fixation with obsolite and little known cartridges , mostly in 22 cal. so the 219 just slid right into what I was looking for , it fits well between my 224 GNR and the 223 Rem.

Stimpy,
Thanks for the information on the use of a Hornet barrel. A load that has worked good for me in my highwall has been 29gr. of H-4895 with a 50 gr. bullet. That should give you somewhere around 3,400 fps. I have used a couple different bullets with no difference in accuracy. I average around .75 at 100 yards.

You could use the 243 for a donor and stub with a 224 barrel chambered for the 219 Donaldson Wasp. A good choice of cartridge By the Way  ;D

Stub, yes, but at much greater expense than a well done re-chamber.
