788 replacement bolt headspace
« on: January 05, 2011, 01:02:41 PM »
I had to find a bolt assembly for a rem.788,after finally getting one what is the proper step to take to be sure it has the proper headspace cause I dont want to destroy it or me. The new (to me)bolt chambers nice and tight. I did prime a few cases which chambered and fired good and extracted good. The rifle is chambered in 308win. We've kinda only haveone gunsmith around here so his prices are a bit steep on anything or should I just bite the bullet and do it anyway to be safe. Thanks

There are ghetto ways of checking headspace. You need calipers, an unfired case, and a fired primer at a minimum. Which it sounds like you may. Google it.

I took it over to an old (76) retired gunsmith I know and since he's feeling alot better than he has for a long while he went ahead and checked it all out and fired it,everything was a perfect match. It only cost me a couple packages of venison and some jerky,I cant argue with that. Mainly glad he's up and at it again. Thanks for the input on the topic.
