Very Nice.  I'm going to go with the Mueller 3-9×40 Hybrid on my new Hornet, I just haven't decided on what mount and rings to use. If I might ask, What mount and rings did you go with?

the finish matches perfectly and is well done, and the fit seems perfect as well, i will have to shoot to find out for sure of course

and as you can see there is a nice amount of room for hammer manipulation there, even if you don't use the extension

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/SCP609-34.html

I wasn't sure what would fit, I have never had to worry about a hammer interfering with a scope before, but i wanted as low a mount as possible. I just bought the cheapest, yet seemingly decent ones I could find. After I shoot the rifle and see how the rings hold up I will decide whether or not to keep them. I try to buy items manufactured here in the USA, but I already bought the Mueller so I figured "why not". Speaking of which, I love my APT so far! I got the 4.5/14x40 and I am very impressed. Good luck! Make sure and post pics too.

Is that the .308 or .223?

If it's the .308 I would suggest fitting some form of recoil pad to the buttstock or wearing a shooting shirt/vest w/ extra padding on the shoulder.  I had a .308 survivor and when sighting it in for deer season it left some impressive bruises on my shoulder lol...

.223 would be good to go.

Nice gun either way.  Congrats!

Sam, you're saying the .308 beat you up??  I'm not meaning to sound smart a$$ed about it, but I can shoot my Ruger M77 MKII all day in a tee shirt, or naked for that matter and not be bothered....It's a light rifle and barrel, not wearing a recoil pad.  I shoot my .38-55 on an unpadded BC Carbine stock and that doesn't bother me either, and it is loaded hot.  The only bruises I have ever gotten were from an incorrectly held 12 ga. wing shooting.

Carbineman,

Michigan hunting regulations require all U.P. deer hunters to hunt in the buff.  At least that is what Pete keeps tellin' me. ;D

Pete,

I bet that Ruger and BC both have wood stocks?  The survivor has a greatly hallowed out buttstock and an odd comb angle that screams "HIT ME HARDER!" in the .308.  I'm no wuss to recoil, but for a .308 it's a poor stock design.  If the buttstock were raised in line w/ the bore and it sported even a minor recoil pad, it would be a pussycat.

Sam, I understand.  I've never owned a Survivor, I just never liked the looks of them.  The other thing, what is the purpose of a bull barrel on a light weight survival rifle.  It should be a light weight all the way.

Pete , Do NOT try to understand the thinking @ H&R , it will only hurt your head , after years of trying to understand why they never made a 32 H&R mag barrel - I just gave up and went with the flow .  ;D

No, just wishful thinking.  It's either too cold here or the flies'd eat ya alive.....or both ::)  Ya might get ta run around naked one day a year....that's why there's no nudist parks up here.  Wouldn't be too profitable.

Its the .308, I plan to switch the stock for this one: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=649971
and then throw a karsten kydex cheek rest, and then some krylon camo to finish it off. I was also toying with the idea of mutilating the survivor stock and adding bondo to make it look like one of those McMillan precision stocks.

Pete
I like the for-end and bull barrel, that's really why I chose it, I want to get a precision/varmint look out of it.

I plan on using it on coyotes and white tail, I am also so going to try and get out to at 500 yards with it if I can, or at least 300 and try to work on my long range skills. I have heard mixed reports about accuracy on handis so I plan to put up a review after all is said and done. Gonna go sight her in tomorrow weather permitting, might try some 300 yard shots if I have any ammo left.

The choate target stock is pretty awesome as well... I had one on my .223 and loved it... It's the one that comes on the ultra barking fluted Handi's

You'll get out to 500 yards with the .308 easily.  They shoot them at 1000 in competition.  I killed both a fox and coyote at well over 300 with perfect shoulder shots.  A fox is a pretty slim target.

I will second Singleshotsam.... my .308 survivor killed on both ends at first. I shot that gun prone with no recoil pad.... first time ive EVER had a bruised shoulder the next morning from shooting. But Sam.... you're not supposed to tell him before he shoots  ;D learning first hand is half the fun!!  I had a harris bipod and cheap limbsaver recoil pad on mine and it was great to shoot after that. Bench shooting or standing and shooting it wasn't too bad. I will agree though, I was very displeased with the quality of the hardware on the survivor..../shrug ... hence why I am "trying" to make my own right now lol. Other than that though it is a fun shooting rifle! Honestly I am kinda glad that I didnt like the hardware.. cus I am enjoying customizing my rifle to be "mine".

Good luck with your new rifle.

Used to shoot a whole lot of 7.62 Nato in High Power Matchs.

My M1A did real good with 155 grain palmas and the 175 match kings.  The 175 grainers were really easy to keep super sonic at 1000 yards.

The wind is the most difficult thing to master at the 500 -1000 yard distances.  It is really easy to figure out the drop as that is virtually constant unless there are really big temperature changes or changes in elevation.
as a general rule heavier bullets buck the wind better than lighter, but ballistic coefficients can make  a difference.  Consult Sierras ballistic tables.  Had really good luck with Imr 4895, AA2520, IMR 4064 and Varget.  Of the 4 I like varget the best.

Also dont try to go super max velocities.  Work towards the most accurate load for your rifle.

Try Varget and 155's and 175's, Matchkings.

You'll be hard pressed to get pressure behind the 155's, and just work up slow on the 175's, you can fit a lot in before pressure.

The books go awful easy on the 308 with Varget...Hodgdon data is the best thing I've found.  If those loads don't shoot, you're outta luck.  ;D
