Scope power for .17hm2 sportster
« on: June 30, 2010, 05:12:46 PM »
I just picked up a .17hm2 sportster and need ideas for what power scope to put on it.  I don't need ideas on the brand of scope, my budget will help decide that, just what power would work best with this round.  Would a fixed power like a 4x or 6x be good or should I look more towards a variable like a 3-9 or 4-12?  Also would the same power be good for the .17 hmr too, I was thinking of sending it back for another barrel.  What kind of range should I expect from this round.  I will mostly be at the range punching paper with it but might take it in the woods a little.  Thanx in advance.

I have a 2-7x32 on mine a 3-12x32 on my 17hmr and a 6x on my 5mm and anyone of these or what you suggest are all right for the little 17mII. If you want to play around with it much I would suggest a BSA Sweet 17 with the turrets that you can adjust while you are punching paper. Tiny groups are normal  @100 yrds with light wind. Kurt

I think for general shooting, a fixed 4X or 6X is ok for the Mach 2. BUT, I use mine mostly for gophers, and I like more power, for the style of shooting I like best ( rested on top of fence post, scanning through grass looking for them, or parts of them ). a 3-9 or 4-12 is great, especially with A.O., for those ocassional close-in shots. I think it's best max range is around 125 yards or so, although on a calm day it will hit at greater range, but bullet performance seems to tucker out around that range.
The HMR is good for another 75 yards or so, in fact, when you check out a ballistic chart, it pretty well shows a 75 yard advantage. So for the HMR, for the style of shooting I do, a 4-12 is best, or a bit more on the upper end, and again, with A.O.
You are lucky to have a Sportster in mach 2, hard to find on the used gun market, as you probably are well aware of.
I did send my .17 Mach 2 back to the factory to have the HMR barrel installed, but this was back in the "old days", when it was quite a bit cheaper then it is now. I also had them do their trigger job on it. If I were to get another Mach 2 ( I keep looking ), and also wanted another HMR, I think that I would just buy another rifle, as the costs come very close. If you do get the new barrel fitted, consider getting the forend that is held on by the finger tightened knob, makes for easy in-field replacing, and mine do not change zero when swapping barrels. Both are great chamberings !!!

I forgot to mention...I got this new for $149.  He did say he had a few more but I don't know what the price will be on them.

I assume the dealer who has them is in N.Y.??? Too bad, as that is a great price, especially compared to what they are selling for used..but for me, with shipping, FFL fee's, etc.etc. I'll just keep looking locally. Hopefully NEF will see fit to again ofer them.

Yes he is in NY...waaayyyy upstate NY.  I am only 5 minutes from Canada and 10 minutes from VT.  He is about 30 miles west of me and the same distance from canada.

Well...I threw a Tasco pronghorn 3-9x32 scope on it I had sitting around and took it to the range.  When I zoomed to 9x power everything went fuzzy so I guess I need a new scope.  Probably gonna look at Gander and Wallyworld this week and see what I can find in my price range (which isn't very much).

I have the BSA Sweet 17 on my .17HMR and love it.  From 125 to 250 yards it shoots a little high (1 to 2 inches) when you dial the scope.  But at 250 it comes back in and is right on at 300 yards.

I have one of the mart-o-wal's Centerpoint 4x16's mil-dot on my HMR...for $69 and tax you can't beat it.  I leave it on 12x and it's a clean view and the when it's dead on at 100 with the crosshairs..it's dead on at 169yds with the first dot down on the mil-dot.  I can break eggs at 169yds (the distance between my shooting bench and the top of the dam on my pond)  granted they were jumbo eggs, but I can shoot "terrorist" eggs out from behind "hostage" eggs at 100.  Don't forget the magic marker faces ;D  Hey...watch those snide remarks!!  There's not much to do around here....

Mine wears a 3x9 AO Leupold VXII, my 22RF wears a Leupold rimfire 2X7 and my 17HMR a Nikon Monarch gold 4x12 AO.

One huge important thing to know when buying a rim-fire scope is parallax. CF rifle scopes have it set to 100+ yards and it doesn't work so great for a caliber that sees more 25-50Yard targets than 100+ ones. Do yourself a favor and buy a rim-fire specific scope or one with a Adjustable Objective.

Both of my 17s (HMR and 17M2) wear 4-12x40 AO scopes.
Have fun with the Sportster!
