Handi Rifle in 250 Savage?
« on: January 07, 2011, 06:39:53 AM »
Hello everyone, I am new to Graybeard Outdoors.
After getting my Savage model 99 in 250 Savage (250-3000) reblued recently I decided to semi-retire it.  Now I am looking to get another 250 Savage.  I know Savage makes their models 14 & 16 in 250, but I like the look, balance, and price of the Handi Rifle.  Since 250 Savage is not included in the NEF caliber selection, how do I get a Handi Rifle in 250 Savage?  Thanks

That will cost you, plain and simple  :(.
One way is a custom 'stub' barrel built up on a shotgun (or rifle) barrel that properly fits your frame. The breech section c/w underlug to the hinge pin is a donor to bore, fit, and chamber another barrel into it. This way you can choose a barrel length and taper to fit your ideas.
See the FAQs and search this forum on stub projects, it has been done quite a bit, and there are folks here who will fill you in more  :).

Welcome! A good rebore/rechamber of a suitable existing H&R barrel will work just fine, there are several members here with .25 cal Handis done with just a rebore and rechamber, Graybeard has a 25-20 done from a Hornet by site sponsor Wayne York of Oregunsmithing,  Fred has a 257 Roberts done from a 223 Ultra, Wayne York has done many, many rebores for members here including several for me, plan on about $325-$350 plus the cost of any donor parts for either a stub or rebore.

Every once in a while a custom barrel turns up here (thats how I got my 25-35), but you gotta be quick!
Since you already have some stuff, and like .25s, how about the 25-06 model? Only one more set of dies and load it to whatever power level you want (and the price is right!).

What is the difference between a re-bore and a re-chamber?

A rechamber just enlarges the chamber on a barrel that already has the correct bore for the newly rechambered cartridge, a rebore cuts the bore of an existing barrel larger to be suitable for the newly rechambered cartridge. H&R doesn't make any barrel that is suitable for just a rechamber to 250 Savage, the only .25 cal they make is the 25-06 which already has a bigger chamber than the 250 Savage. That means the only way to have a 250 Savage H&R is to rebore and rechamber a smaller chambered and bored H&R barrel like a hornet or 223, or have a stubbed barrel made.

For that project, Wayne told me he wants a 22 Hornet barrel to start with. The barrel must fit your reciever, of course, so you either buy a Hornet rifle, or you send Wayne your reciever so he can fit the barrel to it.

It seemed to me about a $400 dream project on a $250 rifle. I really, really, want a 250 Savage, but at that price I will most likely have to forget the dream, and just get a 243 barrel fitted to my receiver by H&R. ( I can just keep telling myself "a 243 is almost the same as a 250, a 243 is almost the same as a 250...)

I don't understand Wayne's reasoning for the Hornet only, the 223 is dimensionally fine for a rechamber to 250 Savage, the AmmoGuide rechamber guide says it's good to go with a rebore, swap out the ejector/extractor for a 30-06 and it's done. ???

What do you expect? You are gettinga custom brand new match grade barrel.
A march grade barrel for a bolt action fitted and chambered is $550 US.

You want to have a barrel that shoots you have to spend some money.

I have two rebored rifles with upgraded wood and barrels shaped octagon.
Top isa 257 Roberts, bottom a 6x47. Both shoot less than 1/2" groups at 100. Two deadly rifles for deer and varmints. Are they worth the extra money? You bet they are.

Thanks Tim.
I get peed off when a bunch of cheap scates think they can get a custom
caliber Handi for nothing, and Wayne York's work is very reasonable and good.

Wonderful round in a Savage 99.  Hold out for a 99.  They are out there.  For a user, 99A Saddle Guns are the ONE.  Good luck on your quest.

Buying an aftermarket high quality barrel is something I thought about for years. Finally did it about 10 years ago and then wondered why I had cheated myself out of such an ENJOYABLE piece of machined metal for so long!!
Don't put it off any longer. Aftermarket barrels for ANY rifle are an experience a rifle shooter should indulge himself [and his finances] IN~!
My .250 Savage Ackley Improved is on a Ruger 77 Mark II action. It shoots so well that you'd call me less than honest if I told you how SMALL it will shoot Nosler Ballistic tips [100 grain].
I've fitted several barrels to my rifles [CZ 527s, Ruger 77s, Remington 7/700s].
You MUST try a REALLY GOOD ACCURATE barrel~! You too might wonder why you dragged your feet for so long!!
It's a bit addictive to shoot groups of 1/2" and under ; )

BTW, there are several companys that make/weld lugs to Contender actions, I wonder why not at least one or two for the Handi Rifles? Possibly because the rifles need to be fitted specifically to each?

Probably the reason for the Hornet for rebore is that the shorter cartridge allows more room for the rifling cutter to settle down to a smooth cut.  That should give smotther rifling in the throat area.

Maybe that's more critical with the smaller bore, but Wayne has done several rebores for me, the last was a 260 Rem from a .243 which has the same length chamber.

The rest of the gun is just a platform for the barrel, the part that really does the job intended. In building muzzleloaders I have recommended often to people that they buy the best barrel they can, then the best lock. After that, even if mounted in a 2x4 its gonna be a shooter.
BTW, on cartridge rifles: The best barrel chambered in a less than perfect, concentric way is likely to not shoot as well as a decent barrel chambered well. Do not scrimp on who chambers your expensive custom barrel. Bear in mind, though, that not everyone who charges a lot does it right. Have it done by someone who 'cares'.

Would it make more sense to forgo the 250 Savage and rechamber a 243 to 260 Rem?  Would this be an easier project and a cheaper project?

I don't think that it would be any easier, and certainly no cheaper, I'd get what you want.  ;)
