Most accurate handi-Least accurate handi
« on: January 07, 2011, 01:36:07 PM »
While reading on another BB I ran across a thread about a purchase of a new Handi in 25-06. In the text of the thread came this interesting revelation according to a retired test shooter that worked at H&R, the 25-06 was the most accurate caliber and the 7mm-08 the most troublesome.

In the thread the retired test shooter was unable to ascertain why this was. Just thought I'd pass this along FWIW.

The least accurate seems to be the .243 super light. I know I have complained about this gun before. It just doesn't shoot good. I will send it to H&R sometime this winter. I want another H&R for my son (13) so he can shoot deer more than 50 yds away. I know of a new  H&R .44 mag for 250 plus tax I would like to give him bur he loves his little handy and is attached to it cause he got his first deer with it. Most accurate? hard to tell.

Had a bunch of barrels for Handi's I've had. Most accurate was a 30/30 Win, and same barrel after reaming to Ackley Improved, first three always touching at 100yds.
Then a 45/70 would 'one hole' at 100 yards.
Had them fit a .223 Rem barrel, it would not do any better than 1" at 100yards, which is "ok" but surely not the norm for the cartridge. Tom at H&R/NEF said to send it back and they would make sure I got a better barrel replacement. Great guys. I sold the rifle before taking them up on the offer.
Now I'm just into Contenders : )

I had a 7mm-08 and it was very accurate. I have had a 243 bull barrel and it shoots .75 at 100 if I do my part.

My best... some would argue its not a true handi... Its my 17M2. FAR more accurate than ANYTHING else I own.

My .22 Hornet is under an inch as is my 17 HMR, .223 and .243. My 25/06, 280, maxi, Casull and 45-70s right at an inch at 100 yards.

My .500 S&W would be my least accurate.

For a Handi with a factory barrel , ( Best groups ) its my 243 Super lite , any First - 3 shot group will out shoot even some of my pricer bolt guns , now for overall groups & all day shooting , hands down its my 224 GNR Handi , its my go-to gun for all my Varmint shooting out to 300 yards .

As for the worst , its a tie between an old 450 Marlin ( gone ) and my 22-250 , neither would or will shoot worth a damn past 30 yards .  >:(

+1 on the 500S&W being one of my least accurate Handis, best I've been able to do is ~2" at 100yds with a scope, but it's pretty consistent with all of the bullets I've used, 350gr and 385gr jacketed, as well as 440gr, and 700gr cast, 2" is plenty accurate for its intended purpose and range tho.

The most consistently accurate of all H&R chamberings I own would be the 30-30 and 25-06, both shoot consistently under 1" 100yd groups with all loads I've shot, factory or handloads. Runners up are all 45-70s of course, 223, 243, 280 and 30-06 for me.

I had a .270 NEF that would shoot 15" three shot 200 yard groups. I don't think it had much to do with the cartridge though. My .45-70 and my son's .243 Superlihgt Compact shoot much better. In fact the .243 is amazingly accurate with factory Remington 100 grain Core-Lokts.
