DPMS 6.8 SPC Upper Receiver Assembly

I've been considering getting a 16" 6.8 SPC Upper Receiver Assembly. I keep reading about Spec II Chambers, 1 in 11" Twist Rates, this brand and that brand.

In talking to a buddy of mine he has did some shooting with a DPMS 6.8 SPC. I am not sure about the Chamber but the 16" M4 DPMS 6.8 is advertised as having a 1 in 11" Twist Barrel.

At any rate I would just like to know if anyone is shooting a 16" DPMS 6.8 SPC and what your opinion of it is.

To clarify this 6.8 SPC Upper Receiver Assembly will be used for Hunting Whitetail Deer at reasonable range. More specifically for my Wife, Daughters and Grand Daughter to use for Hunting Whitetail Deer at reasonable range, but that is not to say I won't use it also.

Dont have a 6.8 at the moment, but know quite a few who use em for hogs and deer. They kill well at reasonable ranges, and the folks that use em like em!  If thats any help.

very popular caliber. Don't have one my self but a few friends do a they like the 6.8. I don't think that they have used it for deer but I am sure it could do the job.

I too dont have one but have shot the buddys and it was very accurate. More accurate them my 762x39 ar. Ballisticly there close with a small advantage going to the 6.8. Biggest problem he has is he cant reliably find ammo for it. Even brass has been about non existant. Before you buy make sure you can feed it!

Thanks for the replies guys. Yep that is always a concern these days, ammo that is. Heck I have been having a hard time finding Rimfire Ammo lately again.

Sorry for reviving this old thread but I do have some experiences with my 18.6" Robinson Arms XCR-L in 6.8 SPC 1-11" twist spec 11 chambered rifle that may interest you.

My favorite bullet for hunting that was designed specifically for the 6.8 SPC is the new Barnes 95gr TTSX I load them with Rem LR primer brass, 30grs H322, Win LR primers & lightly crimp with a Lee factory crimp die this load = 2825fps.

Here are a couple pics of a rock I shot @ 350 yards you can see 2 hits and the 3rd shot hit in the sand between my thumb and the bottom left of the rock.



Pic of the shot rock is located 20 - 30 ft to the left of the top of the light coloured log.



Recovered 95gr TTSX shot into very soft sand/moss @ appr 330 yards.

Have you done anything about that 6.8 yet SD? My daughter could use an upgrade in rifles and this should be an easy way to get there.I have a Panther and would like to make it more versatile. What I read makes it pretty clear the Spec II chamber is the way to go as is the 1:11 twist.

The problem here is that for the cost of the uppers I run across I could get a complete compact Ruger carbine in 7mm-08 and a nice scope.

The 6.8 works good for deer, I killed two this year, 2 shots, 2 kills.

I shot 2 mule deer this last fall as well with the load in my previous post both were one shot DRT...

Hard to beat a 7mm08 bolt action rifle combo for deer...

The 7mm08 is my first choice for her and the most likely to happen. I want that 6.8, and her using it would just grease the skids for SWMBO. I'm not sure I would want to leave the 1895 at home though.

Any opinions on what sort of range the 6.8 has on antelope? I have a 300wm and it seems a bit much for the job. Assumeing good bullets, properly placed is 325yds too much to ask for the cartridge?

With a 95gr Barnes TTSX that are designed to expand down to 1600fps if you can place the bullet accurately you would be good to 450 yards.

Myself on deer I would push 300 - 350 yards and a guy on 68forum just posted that he shot a deer @ 400 yards with his 6.8spc...

That is awsome, I'm not sure I am a 400yd shooter on such a small live target. It's good to know the round has the energy though.

Energy (oh man how do I say this) is the incorrect way of explaining this because the energy levels are down to appr 600 ft lbs @ 450 yards velocities are down to 1700fps with a muzzle velocity of 2800fps and everyone knows that on a deer size target the minimum ft lbs of energy should with the rest of the bullets available on the market not be less than 1000lbs.

The correct way is these bullets will penetrate/expand resulting in a clean kill when we do our part out to 450 yards.

My 6.8 has a 20 in bbl. Its a parts gun . I posted yesterday some thoughts on using onr to hunt. I think the 16 inch bbl would be better for where I hunt with one. I won't waste space here its in the same forum. Mine is accurate with Hornady ammo At 50 yards is one hole . Remington ball is an inch or so .
