New Optima's Achilles Heel
« on: December 06, 2010, 03:34:34 AM »
After hunting with this rifle for 7 days, I have found a design flaw.  It tends to break open while carrying it on a sling.  The first time it happened, it cost me a deer.  When i brought the rifle up, I noticed it was broke open.  I snapped it shut, cocked it and pulled the trigger.  Nothing.  Opened it up and no primer.  The old doe didn't stick around for me to fish out a new primer, tho.  I'm wondering, what in the world just happened.  Second time, I was leaving the blind and it was open, no primer.  Now I'm starting to think something's wrong with this rifle.  The next morning, it cost me a shot at a coyote, same story.  So I spent the rest of the morning in the blind trying to make it break open.  At this point, I started carrying a pocket full of loose 209's to get at them easier.  I was able to figure it out on the fifth time, Sunday morning.  When I left the blind, I know it was locked and when I got to the truck 5 mins later it was open.  It seems that the newly relocated break open lever in fron tof the trigger guard likes to catch on clothing while carrying it on the sling.  When you go to take it off your shoulder, it unlatches.  It also opens up if you carry it with one hand right in front of the trigger guard.  I was REALLY starting to like this rifle, too.  Not so much now.  I doubt that CVA can/will do anything about it and postage kinda negates the deal I got on it.  It may be a problem with QC on the barrel latch, but right now I tend to think it is just a design flaw.  Still the easiest clean ups ever and excellent accuracy, but I'm changing my rating of 10 to a 5!  Reliability is #1 on my list of a good rifle.....

i havent had that happen.

The button must really be getting caught up on some heavy clothing.  I'd dress up in hunting clothes and have a friend watch you and see what happens

Bigblock, I was hoping you'd post as I know you were carrying yours all week, too.  In those hours of boredom between chances, I started wondering if you were having this problem.  I did have on my heaviest clothes!  It may be that the latch doesn't engage as well as it should, although it has never came open at the shot (momma's Sidekick does sometimes with 25ACP primers).  Right now, I'll just be aware of it and talk to CVA after deer season is thru.  Except for that I still love this rifle.....

Hey Denny, i was looking at my Optima and found 2 things.

Do you lightly close your Optima?   I found that it i lightly close mine up, the trigger release is very easy to break open.

If i slam it shut " just a solid firm shut" the trigger release is very stiff and when it breaks open, it gives off a loud click.

I played around with it a little before work yesterday and found that it locks up solid and takes a full stroke of the breakdown lever to release it.  It had to be catching on my heavy clothes.  I kept the sling pretty tight due to the rifle being barrel heavy.  This morning I noticed the click you told about, too.  Next weekend I will be out again and will make sure the rifle locks up with a firm closing and will loosen the sling up too.  The rifle was sooo easy to work up a load on, I never took the time to get to know it's little quirks!  It was "wow, what a machine...let's go huntin' baby!"  I'm still going to carry a pocketful of 209's for a while, tho....

Well, after 4 more days over 2 late seasons, I have not had a problem with this rifle.  I think that I was carrying it with the sling too tight, causing it to catch on my heavy clothes when I took it off my shoulder.  3 weeks ago after Ohio's extended gun season weekend, I had problems with the barrel showing slight rusting after the complete cleaning.  After 4 barrel oilings in 8 days showing rust, I went out and bought a .54 bore brush and scrubbed the barrel with that then a light coat of oil in the bore.  Several days of checking it...problem solved.  I love this rifle and in the spring, it will be wearing my Leupold VX-II!  Thanks again to Bigblock for all his posts on this rifle.  For the price, it is a great entry level rifle and a great go to gun, and it's now my main squeeze!

Denny, You really do need to look into this product. Especially the Bore Coat.  For $25 it will be the best money you spend for an accessory for your muzzle loader.

When i first did my Optima with both products, a few days later it was a total down pour. I put on my rain coat and went hiking for a good solid 3 hours to test out how well it worked and after that, almost all of my muzzle loaders got both treatments.

Very easy to apply and the gun shield for the outside of the barrel only takes 15 minutes in between coats. I apply at least 3 coats.
