.445 SuperMag Reamer
« on: January 05, 2011, 04:01:40 AM »
Well I've read thru bunches of old threads and most are older. My question is: Is there a .445 supermag reamer available for rent here.

I see listing for the 454 and the 357 max but can't nail down the .445 availablility. Thinking about taking the step.

There are .445 reamers for rent, but not from members here.  Tim'll be along to fill you in.

It's been asked before, none so far, 4D and Elk Ridge rent reamers tho. Brass is much harder to find, Starline is the only maker and they won't make any until they have back orders of 60k, they were only up to 20k a week or two ago.  :-\

A new reamer will cost about $100.

A: You don't have to buy the reamer.  You  rent it.

B:  There is brass available.....not from Starline just now, but it can be found.  I loaded at least a hundred rounds the day after Christmas.

Personally, I love the round.  It's like a shorter .45-70.  While you're waiting to find the brass, you can still shoot .44 specials, .44 Russian and .44 magnums.  Also, it doesn't cost a heck of a lot more to reload for than the .357.

I'd go do it.......OH!!.......I remember now.......I did it ;D ;D

Seriously, it is a sweet Handi baby.

I can't recommend it highly enough.

Pete, Was thinking about one for the people on here. Don't know how many would do it if brass is a problem. Then thought of like if 5 guys wanted to ream then they could send an amount to Tim (as a donation?), he could buy it and they would be first on the list. Then future procedes would go to Graybeards. Don't know if that would work. I'd be interested  as I think I would like to try that cartridge. It's not a high priority right now as I probably won't shoot my 44 again till next Fall?? More time to find brass ;) Got a lot of other things that need loaded and shooted right now. I haven't been able to find loading data or carteidge dimensions in any of my old books. I think it was posted on here before. Also I think I read before that you can just use your 44 mag dies ???

This is probably why my "old" boss told me I wasn't supposed to think ;D

Should be loading now anyway ;)

I believe that is close to the way the .357 max reamer got started as well as the .454.

I and a lot of others here have load data for the .445.  Just shout and we'll get it to you.  It aint rocket science, and you don't need super high pressures or velocity.  I think mine are running an average of about 1580 fps.  And yes, I do use my .44 Mag dies.

Pete,

I'm thinkin' when you get your 444M that you'll be a lot less concerned about buyin' brass for that 444 Lite of yours. ;D

I had 445 sm in mind but the brass scared me off. With brass available I would definitely be interested, how do we remedy the brass question? ear

Welcome steelworker!

Maybe, maybe not, there's no SAAMI standard for the 445SM, the 44mag SAAMI MAP is 36kpsi, max loads in the 445SM run 43kcup. It's best to use an SB2 frame, then there's no doubt it's safe.  ;)

Well I decided to go ahead and jump in the water. Ordered (rental) the reamer from 4D a few minutes ago and should have it in a few days. Also placed a backorder with Midway for 100 brass whenever they get the backorders moving. So I should be ready to join the group of satisified .445SM users in a few days.

Thanks to all for the good info on this site. Hope it goes smooth.

Handi factory chambers tend to have deep rim cuts so be careful not to go any deeper.  Reaming chambers is fun so have a good time.

And somebody could do like I did.  Pony up the bucks and buy a reamer.  Use it to do as many barrels as you have available, then contribute it to the site.  Lord knows we all gain from having this site available.  I've had more than a hundred bucks worth of questions answered here, some I questions I didn't even know I had til I read the answer!

Well add another .445 to the greybeard inventory. Got it taken care of. Now awaiting some .445 brass so I can load up some test loads. Have a member on here graciously sending me a few. Also I'm on backorder along with everybody else at midway.

Now that you have reamed out a plinking caliber chamber it is time to ream a 45-120. ;D  Congrats and let us know how it shoots.
