is 12 gauge slug legal for moose where you live?
« on: October 04, 2010, 08:17:21 AM »
Hi, guys.  I would like to know if it is legal for moose to be harvested in the state or province where you leave.   I am currently thinking about applying for tags in next couple of years. My preferred weapon is a Mossberg 500 slug gun loaded with a 450 grain bullet at 1600 fps, and I cast my own bullets as well.   Please reply by just giving state or province name and a yes or no answer.  Thanks!

In Maine shotguns are legal when used with a single projectile. No pellets allowed.

Alaska, yes, I believe part of Game Unit 14 is slug only - Matanuska / Susitna valley area where human population has exploded.
In the rest of the state I believe you may choose to hunt big game with a shotgun slug - I don't think buckshot or shot is legal but couldn't find the actual regulation.
Many many folks here carry shotguns with slugs for bear defense.

In addition to general hunting restrictions listed on page 18, big game MAY NOT be taken by the following methods:
Hunting big game using a rimfire firearm, EXCEPT you may use .22 caliber rimfire cartridges to take swimming caribou
from a boat in Units 23 and 26.

1 Palmer-Wasilla Management Area: The portion of Unit 14A ...(see link)....... the area is closed to hunting except that: Big game may be taken with a muzzleloader, shotguns with slugs and bow and arrow only, with weapon-specific certification. Small game, deleterious exotic wildlife and fur animals may be taken by muzzleloader, shotguns, air rifle, falconry, or bow and arrow only. Weapons certification is required for muzzleloader for all game, bow and arrow for big game, and shotgun   hunters (Basic Hunter Education) for big game.
