GOT TO GLOAT !!
« on: February 16, 2011, 07:59:26 AM »
I don't normally gloat to much about my H&R purchases but this Shikari that I got last month from BenT out of the classifieds is no doubt the finest older H&R I have found. The pictures in the ad do not do it justice .Not a spot or mark on the steel or the stocks. I spent the better part of 5yrs waiting for this one and my patience paid off. I have a full set of brass trigger gaurd ,spacer and bbl band that will go on this baby along with a new brass Skinner peep.Or if that don't appear right I got a full set of steel. Hopefully I can get it done before the weather gets to nice and will post picture when completed. On a side note anybody else who have one in 45/70? have you checked your twist the facts say 1-20 and I assume that is for the newer 45/70's as mine measures 1-22 I measured it with 3 differant rods and got the same thing every time (Tim maybe FAQ) maybe do to low pressure loads? Any way Thank you BenT for making it available to us. Andy to give you a better idea this one is even nicer than the .45 Huntsman I got from you(if that is even possible). Kurt

Congrats Kurt, sounds like a nice project. The Shikari barrels are long noted as being great cast bullet shooters, no microgroove rifling to deal with, ballard AFAIK. I've checked most of the six modern 45-70 barrels I have, they're all 1:20" so far, all are older ejector barrels, not as old as a Shikari tho, I haven't checked the newer extractors yet, but I'll check them.

I can't wait for the pics either.  I've long wanted to do a Shikari with brass furniture myself.  If you don't mind my asking, where'd you find the barrel band.

I got the whole gun. There is a pic of it 2 or 3 pages back in the want to sell ads it is Listed by BenT. Now the hunt begins for a 44 Shikari bbl and IIRC there was a smooth bore 44/410 or that may of been a Wesson Harrington? The bbl band is a custom made modified from a IIRC 3 band 1873 springfield. I got the part #'s highlighted in my Dixie cataloge it is the same shape but a little big so I split it and cut some out and squeezed it down and in on the sides til I got the right size then brazed it back togeather.
