What load for a 45-70 BC 32" barrel for long range?
« on: January 15, 2011, 10:01:02 AM »
I have the 32" barrel BC, and have been using the RCBS 405gr.  I want to go out to long range (300 + yds) I know the 405 will go out there but I want the 500gr.   All for silhouette/score shooting.   I checked the 500 out to see if it would fit into my BC, IT WILL. COL 2.81.   I am having Brooks make me a 500 creedmoor.   I can get all kinds of loads for BP, but I will be using smoke less powder.  (I now have about 8lb of H4198) I know I can go out and get all kinds of powder to try, but was wondering if anyone is doing this and what load and powder to use.  (Was told to keep it in about 1250 to 1350 fps)  Thanks for your time     beng.

The competition single shot shooters I know dont crimp, so if you arent using a full case of smokeless there is no reason to be using a 'crimp groove' on a bullet to limit your seating depth, just get the nose up to the rifling and be good to go.
300 yd is really just the beginning of mid-range, you gotta get past 600 to be in long-range land.
