16" barrel rossi 44 mag

Well I read and read seems like these are well liked.  I found one in like new condition in a shop for 325 plus tax.  Price seems right any one have any advice as to likes dislikes of this gun with the the short barrel.  I am planning on it for a plinking, casual deer gun for back up or old school, partner gun to 44 revolver, and maybe hog rifle on occasions if I ever get time to go again.  Are there any issues with the newer ones, or any rossi's to stay clear of.  The barrel length is my only concern and the buttstock looks like it would transfer more to the shoulder than a marlin.  But my intrest in cast bullets is making me think the rossi will shine better and the price is lower than a used marlin.

I've got 2 Rossi 92s in 357, early and recent imports. They love cast loads, shoot consistent tight groups, carry nice, point great ... I love em. I'm jealous of your deal! I dropped gunslinger spring kits in both, and stainless mag followers. The newer imports have a safety on the bolt, which you can ignore or get a filler bolt or use as a peep sight mount.

Personally I like the 16" barrels, I have a winchester trapper in 45colt and it is the perfect woods gun.  Its around 5 and a half pounds, powerful(with stout reloads), and being so short it really is a joy to carry.  It may look like a toy but it kills deer very well.  For $325 it would be hard to go wrong.  The only thing you will need to change it from a good gun to a great one is some sort of peep sight.  If it has the bolt safety you might want to check into the peep that TeamNelson mentioned, you will get rid of that ugly safety and have a much better sight all in one stroke.  Here it is if its something that you are interested. http://store.stevesgunz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=19_20_27&products_id=5

Thanks for the replies.  I called and they were willing to put it on hold till friday for me.  I like idea of getting rid of the safety and getting a peep.  Might be able to pull that off myself as I have a skinner peep doing nothing, and the plug looks pretty simple.  SN

So far, I've been able to quickly zero three (3) different Rossi M92's ( 2 x 16" carbines) using the issue/height front sights and the bolt peep.

Thanks for the pics and info.  My skinner is setting idle from a past purchase I thought it might work.  Sounds like the front sight wont need changing to get it on, even better.   Your machining skills and techniques are on par with mime.  I have built more stuff with an old atlas drill press than I care to remember.  I got a few tools but that DP would be the last to go.  SN
