Firing pin hole
« on: January 16, 2011, 03:07:00 PM »
I have read LOTS of posts on here and several have talked about the different firing pin hole size in SB1 and Sb2 .  I have a 1991 SB1 12 ga and a 1996 SB2 280 Rem.  The holes and pins look exact same to me.  So I ask is the size difference visible to the naked eye are is one of my shooters not right?  I plan to get a Maxi barrel for the SB1 and a 444 Marlin for the SB2.  Should I get the Maxi fitted to the SB2 instead?  I did buy a 44 mag barrel off Gunbroker, is it safe on my old SB1 frame?

Yes, you can tell by looking at the fireing pins if you have them together.  H&R seems to have put both large and small pins in the shotguns, so yours probably has a small one it it.  The general thought is the pistol cartridges are good on the SB-1 frames, so whatever works out for you should be good.  Larry

Have you verified via the FAQs that the '96 is, in fact, and SB-2 (it doesnt matter what it says on the barrel).

Yes I have verified.  The serial stamp is NK, and it has the open end back of frame.  Just checked my 10 gauge H&R same pin.  Compared that to a Winchester 37 single 12 ga and that pin is huge.  My handi frames have to be the small pin, I think.

You lucky dog!
That gives you lots of options for those two frames.

On the '91 I would think any of the lower pressure/pistol type barrels could be fit by you and on the '96 SB-2 whatever you want in rifle barrels.
Shotgun barrels of choice or notion too, short of 12ga. USH or 10ga, which is on a bigger frame.

Well I am in the hunt for a 357 Maxi and 444 barrel.  Maybe a 500 or 38-55 if I can find one.  H&R wont sell me barrels because of the age.  As far as the USH and 10 ga, I just put the dial caliper to that frame and cant find where it is larger.  Length width heigth, looks same as all the others.  Seems like the barrels on here sell before the seller finishes typing!  LOL

The SB2 10ga shotgun frame is identical in external dimensions to an SB2 rifle frame or SB1 shotgun frame, takes the same stock. The difference is the internal dimension for the chamber swell of the 1.2" 10ga and 12ga USH barrels, standard barrels are 1.1", the side walls of the SB2 shotgun frame are thinner than the other frames and probably why they're heat treated investment cast alloy steel instead of the ductile cast iron of the SB1.
