36gr Varmint Grenades in .22 Hornet?
« on: January 15, 2011, 05:27:58 AM »
I just got my Handi Hornet back yesterday and picked up some 40grain Varmint Grenades, as I had been loading 40 grainers for it previously.  Anyone used the 40's in a Hornet? I'm shooting AA1680. I also have some V-maxes that I already know will work. I'm just wondering if the VG's will expand in the 2500-2600fps range.  If not, I'll load them for my .223

I was corrected...they're 36 gr.

Are they 30 or 36 gr? Or did they start making 40 gr lately?

Aha...these are 36's...I musta transposed "40" from the V-maxs.  I had to go get the box and look.  They were all I saw at the store where I got them.  Ye Olde Braine Farte. I'll edit the subject line.
thanks..

I don't have a Handi in Hornet. I have a couple of Rugers. They are about the same length 36 VG .696 /40 V-MAX .683. The 36s worked well for me in 223. I think they will expand/explode at about any velocity. They should fit well in the Handi chambers as most seem to be long.

What twist is your Handi barrel?

I bought some of the new 30 gr Varmint Grenades and loaded them light in 223 and had impressive results. They should work great in the Hornet. They are short and will load nice in the rotary mag of the Rugers. I'll have to find the velocity but they were accurate and seemed to perform great.

I emailed Barnes about the 30s and was told I could use them in 22-250s. Haven't got to that yet but would think I may get 5000 fps ;D and just dust about ten ft. from the muzzle ???

it's a 1/12 twist....guess the best way to find out is to load some up and see if I can call in a ky-o-te close enough to zap.  ;D
