personally I'm not in a position to afford a double rifle,  cost of 10k plus and limited in use to strickly dangerous game at close range,

10K??  You can buy a Valmet O/U 412 DR for less than 2K, and the EXCELENT Chapuis S&S DR is under 5K.  Both can be had in 9.3x74R, and that's EXCELENT big game medicine, including for big bears.

I have no problem with over 200 yard shots on any big game with my DR, and with more practise 300 will be no problem.

I'm as slow as molasses when itcomes to reload a bolt action :-[
In my case for Alaska it would be a lever rifle, pump or auto banger in that order.

I carry a single shot Handi in 30-06 all summer in Grizzly country.  My wife carries a Remington 7400 semi-auto in 30-06.  We both carry 180gr Nosler Partitions.

The only charging Grizz I have had to shoot was with a .35Whelen in a Mauser action.  One shot had to do, if first shot had not taken it out there would not have been time for a second with a bolt action.  The 225gr Nosler Partition did the job.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

The Browning BAR is probably the fastest .300 and .338 mags on the market. After that I would take the Savage model 116 w/ adj. muz brake. in either caliber.
The Browning may be problematic in super cold weather if you don't switch lubricants.

You are very correct on the lubricants.  It was only 0 a couple weeks ago when I was out.  Somehow I let too much oil into the bolt I guess.  I could not close the bolt on my ammo - the exact same ammo I have been running thru the action all fall without finding anything to shoot.  I could close the bolt on an empty chamber so snapped the trigger. After that I could chamber the ammo.  I have since dried out the bolt more.  I might have had some snow or condensation somewhere in the chamber or bolt too but couldn't see it.

A lot of folks carry a light pump 12 ga with slugs for bear concerns. They seem to withstand bad weather and crud very well, are pretty light and very reliable and relatively inexpensive.

I have 2 friends who have dumped charging bears with bolt guns. One had the gun knocked out of his hands at the shot.  He carried a Win M 70 .338 shot from the hip. The other had a Weatherby Vanguard 30-06 the 2 times he was charged. Deflected one bear, enough for a second shot, dumped another with the first shot at 20 yds I think.

Both guys were very handy with their rifles.
