Aquilla Super Colibri Ft. Lbs. energy ??
« on: January 16, 2011, 09:30:21 PM »
Just wondering what a 20 grain bullet at 500 fps equates to in Ft. Lbs. ??
How about at 450 FPS & 400 FPS as it goes downrange.
They shoot good out of my Sportsman, just curious what the figures are, and how they compare to a decent air-rifle??

Thanks for the quick response, and for the link. Doesn't seem like much. I'm thinking about tryng it out at my favorite ground squirrel and marmot spot, for shots under 25 yards or so. Say I whack 'em with 10 FPE which is probably 5-10 times the weight of a ground squirrel....equivelant to hitting a 200 pound deer with  1000-2000 FPE????
Carefull head shots only, should do it ????

while the taylors KO is useful  in this case we would use Matunas  optimal game weight meant for varmints, the varmint formula uses a different constant. BUT any way for shots under 25yds you have plenty of power. As a airgun'er my self i shoot a .22 pellet in the same power range and am happy with terminal performance between 30-40 yards depending on size.

If you dont have a decently accurate airgun and can use a firearm in your area that is accurate I opt for the firearm. I have both, and usually go for the .22, but I prefer CBs and/or Sub-sonic LRs, depending on range. The SS anchor the nasty little red squirrels here that tear things up.
The Colibri hasnt shown me much and I think I would only use it on junk birds and chipmunks and closer is better.
The sight/scope settings for the Col. is way different than for the others on my guns that I tried, thus would need to be a dedicated to Col. gun. I just go to the airgun for that now.
FWIW, I have the SS rifle sighted in with a peep at 15yds. for a 40ish deg. angle since a lot of my shots are up into a tree for the little reds; bullet to hit at the top of the front bead. Im still good for on out further by a good bit, while the Col.s would be all done.

Thnks for the info guys. Blackwell Bikes, your experience using airguns with similar power is helpfull.
In the past I've used .17HMR, .17 M2, .22 mag, and I will continue to do so. BUT, there is this one spot, right behind a barn, against a fence under trees overlooking a pasture with a creek behind it ( hence, limiting range ), that I think it would be fun to use the Super Colibri's. And, the non-existant noise should keep them popping up.

A couple of years ago we had a problem with grey squirrels in the nieghborhood, and all over town it seems. I was able to eliminate over 250 of the pesky rascals in my back yard over a year or so using Super Colibri's. There were no noise complaints from nieghbors. My preferred shot was a head shot at 20 yards or under. The Super Colibris worked great. I was not the only one doing so, several others in my nieghborhood later told me they were also reducing the population and a friend on the other side of town had almost 200 to his tally as well. Currently we have a healthy and reasonable population of gray squirrels in our area....<><....:)

MSP, thats a cool story, did you get that many out of your own yard ( bait 'em in??), or sort of "spot and stalk" all over? There's folks on the squirrel hunting forums that would have given their eye teeth for that sort of action!!!! Were you able to eat them, and/or sell tails ???
Those greys get to be pretty good size !!
