Yugo SKS's, how are they?

I have owned 2 other SKSs, Russian and Chinese.  Those clean looking Yugo SKSs at the recent gun show are tempting.  How do they shoot?  I liked my Chinese as a shooter and felt it was of good steel overall, except for the bolt body, sold it as I thought having one Russian was enough, then sold the Russian as the bolt was wearing the receiver improperly when it hit the front of the receiver, although it was better made compared to the Chinese.

I am thinking of the Yugo more as a curio piece, as I already have 2 AKs that I like to shoot and they are better in some ways to the SKS, except in accuracy.

Back in the early 1990's when the Chinese SKSs were more avilable, the prices on parts were cheaper then than now, I was surprised at the cost of the bolt body and assembly replacement on the SKSs, they sure have gotten more expensive.

I stayed away from the Yugo's for quite sometime but i started buying some when Century had the ufixem  YUGO M59's for $79(without the gernade launcher) but then I broke down and bought a few yugo 59/66's because of the price plus AIM had a sale on them too plus free shipping(i'm frugal).  The weight difference of the Yugo's to the Chinese impressed me even matching the M59's to the M56's they seem heavier.  The 59/66's have a thicker stock and a little more weight besides. They just have a better feel to them.  The only draw back is no chrome lined barrel so just clean it good like the rest of the bolt's that don't have them too. I haven't shot one yet I'm still busy shooting my new Chinese Paratrooper sks. I never put accuracy, tight groups and sks in the same sentence until I got this paratrooper.  So go look at them and pick one up you will see what i'm talking about.  Now is the time to buy one before the price goes up or the supply runs out if you want one.  There is still the albanian sks's too?  The Russian is suppose to be the best quality sks's.  The sks's are still the cheapest fun rifle you can buy under $100 and inbetween a 22 semi and the big bore semi's (8mm's/308's/30-06's)  their all a hoot to shoot!!!      BigBill

Why sell your sks's you had a good start at collecting them too?? There's only Russian, Romanian, Albanian and Chinese are readily available to us. Well there are more Chinese models like sporters, paratroopers and military ones and fixed mag. and detachable ak mags too, the chinese sure were busy?  I guess if the ak wasn't invented so soon we would have more models of sks's?

I currently have 3 SKS's a Russian (1954 Tula), a Yugo M59/66 and an Albanian.  I've only shot the Russian, I've had that one for about 5 years.  It's a real nice rifle that shoots well.  I've never put it on paper to actually determine accuracy but I'd imagine it would do fairly well.  The Yugo and Alby were recently purchased from AIM.  I drove down there a dew weeks ago since I had the day off and nothing better to do.  It was 4 hours one way but I had never seen the place I had sent so much of my money so I figured what the heck.  :grin:

I bought the $89.00 Yugo and the $89.00 Alby while I was there.  The Yugo is in great shape!  Just a few small dings in the stock, probably not even noticeable unless pointed out.  The Alby was a little rougher.  There was some surface rust on various parts and the stock was nasty.  I was able to refinish the stock and clean the rust off fairly easily.  It looks pretty good now, well worth $89.00 if you like to clean up old guns.  They give you a free replacement stock with the Alby but I wanted to use the original stock since it was serial numbered to match the rifle.  Both guns had fully matching serial numbers.

I have to add this a while back AIM had a special on darkbore yugo sks's for $79 I took a chance and bought one I previously bought 3 "Like new" ones he just had on sale for $89 a few months ago.  While everyone thought they were going to get a new yugo when it said "LIKE NEW" most didn't but they were still in great condition for the price.  But as it turned out my darkbore one out shines all of them its in unissued condition and the darkbore actually looks like brand new/unshot?  The whole gun looks brand new.  I'm still happy with my "LIKE NEW" ones too I don't think there is a better buy right now than the yugo sks's.   Century arms has ufixem yugo 59/66 sks's too if you look at their website.  I'm not sure whats wrong with these but the yugo 59's I got from them had only broken safety levers.                                         BigBill
