Trying the red dot
« on: December 12, 2010, 06:46:21 AM »
So I was on vacation in Arizona, had to go by the cabelas of course, because we don't have such a store in Alaska.  We have many of the catalogs... especially in my bathroom.. but that is another story.  :)  Saw a four reticle two color reflex reddot that immediately interested me, built by truglo.  Took it up to the gun counter... looked at the guy, "will a .454 casull break this?"  Deer in headlights.  He looked at the next guy, same thing - turns out not many people think like I do.  The only thing they could come up with was it breaking loose.

Well I am the proud owner of locktite and a torque driver, so I'm not worried about that.  As of next week when I am home from work, I will get some results pictured for you guys.  I gotta say though, the one thing I didn't like about using a scope on my handguns is losing sight picture.  I think the open nature and quick target aquisition is one of the greatest appeals of handgunning.  This type of reflex sight gives you the pinpoint aim you are looking for, while letting you keep your eyes open and looking forward to your target... not through your sights.  Which is why it was so appealing to me.

Sorry to post this now and make you all wait for pictures, don't worry, they will come.   ;D

I guess I should throw out the proverbial... "Anybody else try this?"   ;)

New Simmons red dot lasted five rounds on my .454 Bull gun. Cabelas paid me back in full. I put my old trusted AimPoint red dot off my 12 ga. slug gun and it lasted about 25 rounds. I found out part of the problem is the mount no matter how tight I get it moves on the rail and it's a factory mount.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

Hmmm, I will have to take a look and see if the mount on it will use blocks to stop it from moving....  The last scope I had on it was blocked on - good feature of the weaver rail.

I never had much luck with red dot sights. Not even on a crossbow. I have reverted  back to an open sight and have never been happier. In this case, for me, "Old School Rules!". Blade and notch for firearm and pin and peep for crossbow.

I may have "accidentally" slipped and am going to pick up an ar-15 tomorrow that the red dot may be better suited for....  I'll still put up pictures.... just with my RB with irons next to the AR with the refllex.    ;D

Corbanzo,

That was a great recovery.  So that the red dot investment don't go to waste, buy an AR-15 rifle to use it on  ;D

Just a little humor, I could not help  ;D

Good luck with your red dot.  I have a Burris red dot and I had use it with most of my handguns.  The largest I have are 45 colt and 44 mag; so that does not compare to the 454 Cas.  I have, however made thousands of shot at may power levels with the 44 mag and it still works.  During a deer season in Iowa, I forgot to turn it off while waiting for a deer that was slowly coming my way.  The deer eventually change directions and left and I forgot to turn the power off.  Later, my friend shot a nice buck and I volunteer to put the buck out of its missery (it was badly wounded) and I realize I could not see the red dot.  I try using my eyes muscle memory but I coud not hit the buck from a 8 feet distance.  That was the last time that sight ride on my S&W 629 handgun.  Otherwise, it is a great sight.

Red dots are jinxed. We sold a bunch at a gun range I worked at and many upon many were returned. We finally quit selling all of them. None would hold a POI. Even on crossbows.  One customer had one custom mounted on an M2 Carbine(full auto) and it would not hold. Personally I don't think it is the mount. I think its the device itself.

My TC in 35 Rem has dissassembled every red dot tried. Some for big money.
