Yesterday was the last day of the PA deer season. I had been putting on small drives to my two sons. There was only an hour left and time for one more drive so I decided to leave the scoped 7x57 at home and take an old 86 Winchester. It is a light weight take down in .33, not much finish left but the bore is good and it shoots pretty good. I shot a doe with it on the last day last year. As I left the house I saw 4 deer running across the cornfield behind the barn. I went to the back of the barn and at 175 yards shot a 7 point buck through both lungs. This is by far the longest shot I have made with iron sights. The deer jumped a little, ran in a 20 yard circle and fell over. Who needs a scoped bolt action? Shotgunner

I hunted out of my hunting buddy's cabin in the Moshannon State Forest just north of the DuBois/Clearfield, Pennsylvania area... and out of 6 of us in deer camp. none of us (other than my cabin-owning buddy who got an 8-pointer) even SAW a deer... doe OR buck! Is this a result of Dr. Alt's "experiment"?

I live in Ohio, but have hunted out of my buddy's deer camp for the past 6 seasons and this is the first season I didn't even SEE a live deer for the week we hunted.

Are there any farms around your camp? This year there were no accorns at all, very little mast of any kind. The game was all concentrated on corn fields here in Tioga county. One afternoon after work I posted my son on the end of a small woodlot and walked through from the other end. 21 deer ran out, he shot one with a Savage 99A in 250-3000. We had lots of deer. In fact I had a fantastic squirrel season, I found a field of corn with a ditch full of water between it and the woods. The only place the squirrels could cross was where the beavers had dropped trees. At one point I saw 7 squirrels run from the field and into the same tree. I do hope the game fares well with all of the snow we seem to be getting. Shotgunner

My favorite .33 is one of the last 30 model 1886s built. It is factory drilled for peep sight, so carries a Lyman model 66. Here in California, where 200 yd shots are common, it never fails to get the job done. Most shots are taken at 150 yds or less, though. One shot usually means hanging meat.

I have been looking for a good deal on a tang sight for the 86. I have found sights but no good deals. Is there a current production sight that will fit the 86? Shotgunner

Lyman makes it's #2 tang sight to fit the original 86 and Browning replicas. It does not fit the Mirokus with tang safety. They are available from several outfits for around $60. Marble's has a tang sight to fit the tang safety 86(#009810), but it costs twice as much as the Lyman. Go figure.
