I got a new 209x50 for early Christmas from my wife. :shock: I am putting a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 on it. I am thinking about the Warne Maxima rings, but what height do I need to clear the hammer and rear sight? Are the Maxima rings a good choice?

Absolutely. Go with the Warne set. I have them on my Encore SS 209X50. The set-up looks great on the stainless gun. Matte black scope, matte black rings and mount, and SS Encore. Check out my other posts I've got a pic of my set-up with an 8pt. buck. I chose to sell off the composite stock set and get a laminated set.

You will be best served with the medium height rings. I have the QD variety on mine. You are able to leave the rear sight on the gun (just barely by about 1/8 inch) and have enough space to cock the hammer, even with a gloved thumb. The scope cover goes on but not all the way. Just sand some off of the bottom and your set. Good luck.

Thanks for the pic Ranger. I looked at this one and the one in the other post also. Good looking gun there. I ordered the medium height rings based on your advice and pics. Should be here tomorrow if all goes well.

Congrats! Like I said, they're a bit heavier, but I think it's some real money well spent. A lifetime investment, for me, my kids, his kids, etc. etc. etc.

Ranger, What brand and power scope do you have on your Encore? Looks like a real nice setup. I need a decent scope for mine.

Good move on the composite stock did the same myself. The pepper laminated sure compliments the stainless gun.

The scope is a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40mm. It is in matte finish and has the fast focus eye piece. I don't know why I would need a fast focus eye piece, but I liked the scope. It has the RainGuard which I like and the Bushnell Lifetime Warranty. I picked it up off of eBay for $200 bucks new. I think it can be had at most of the on-line retailers for about that. With this scope I can print groups at 100 yards less than 2". While not stellar performance, its good enough for me. I figure any deer within 150 yards is toast. I doubt that I'll move it much from 3X while hunting, but I like the ability to crank it up for range shooting.

If you do enough looking at the Optics Discussion here on GrayBeard you'll see that the Bushnell Elite scopes get very high marks. Plus, they're not quite as expensive as some of the other "name brands". I think the quality is definately top notch. Enough for me to drop over $300 on a Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16X40mm for my Encore .223 barrel.
