Powder for 7mm-08
«
on:

I bought a Handi youth model in 7mm-08 for my 9 year old grandson and I want to reload some Nosler 140 gr. Partition Bullets for it. The only reloading I do is for my A-Bolt 280 and I use IMR4350. My question is will the IMR4350 be good in the 22 inch Handi barrel or would I be better off with another one. I'm not looking for reduced loads as he shoots factory rounds o.k., just wanting to know if I should use something else in that shorter barrel.

I'm certain you can find load for 4350. I prefer 4895, 4320 but especailly H335.

Hodgdon list loads and my guess is their test barrels are 24". 2" loss of velocity will be about 200-300 fps if I recall the discussions correctly <--- correct me if i am wrong please. Still...

Thanks. I see you like the faster burning powder. I thought I should be using one faster than the 4350.

I think FPS loss is more like 30-50 per inch, not 100-150

When I got back into reloading after about fifty years I looked for one powder that would work in all the guns that I reload for and found an old favorite
H4895 and it has worked well for me and I also use it in my 7mm-08 and this is the same powder that Hogdons uses in all their reduced loads. I use it in a 7mm Remington mag reduced load with a 120 grn bullet and it works great with very mild recoil. Killed 2 deer with it this year, one dropped in her tracks and the other one that I shot ran about 15 yrds and dropped dead.

Varget with the shorter 120grn Nosler Ballistic tips
IMR4350
is
in their book,,42grns Min---46grns Max. But their test barrel is a 26"

I use H4895 in my 2 grandsons Ruger Compacts. Great results and venison on the table.

Shame on
me
Third base... WELCOME!!!
The "short" 22" barrel is a standard length for the caliber. The extra couple inches available form other manufacturers care a boon to velocity and energy for most all calibers. But 22" is plenty long for getting all your grandson should need from this excellent little caliber.

I use Varget in both a Browning Abolt II and a Remington 700 in 7mm-08.

I have been gone for several days and just got back on here. Thanks for all the help and replies. I hope I can get my loads to shoot good as I'll probably try several powders and bullets suggested here.

I've had good luck with both Hodgon Varget and IMR 4064. I'd think that IMR 4350 would do well also.

the two I have had best results with are varget and IMR 4895. Both shoot very well. I prefer the varget as it is easier to meter and more consistent accuracy.
