Hodgdon Youth Loads
« on: February 05, 2011, 07:02:49 AM »
Horse traded yesterday for another Encore. It's got a 300 Win Mag barrel on it that I'm trying to trade but if the trade doesn't happen I know I'll want to load for it. Recoil doesn't bother me as I love shooting my 500 S&W Mag Katahdin. Problem is that I would be using it for whitetail at ranges of 150 yards or less and I don't need the full destructive power of this potential monster. Found an online page for youth loads from Hodgdon using H4895 powder. Using a listed load for this powder you can reduce the max load by 40 % and be safe. I could run my bullets closer to 308 speed and not totally blow up the critters I shoot. Anyone done any reloading from these youth loads ?

There's always Trail Boss for reduced velocity loads that will kill deer. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

I played with some nice loads in my 308 pistol with RedDot but want a bit more if I load for the 300 WM.

Yes. I loaded .243 & .270 Win youth loads and they worked great.

I have used the Hodgdon Youth data for .30-30, .243, .308 and .30-06.

I will continue to use it, where and when appropriate.

I use IMR SR-4759 for my reduced loads; another bulky powder.
125 gr in a 30-06 at 2700 fps. (30-40 level)
Simmons in Bessemer carries it, Bass might.

.300 Winchester Magnum - 165 grain Speer SP bullet, 29.0 grains of SR 4759 powder, CCI 250 primer, Win. case. COL 3.340". MV 2000 fps in 24" barrel. (Based on the Speer Reloading Manual No. 13.)

My experience was that you can get varying accuracy as the load drops off.  I read that before I tried it my self and would agree, though I only used it in a 458WM.  Smaller cases may fair better?
