:D John, this should be a great crow buster...when I shot lots of crows I had the .223's twin the .222...it was death on crows...it and the .22-250 were my picks for shooting crows with a rifle..now with a very accurate .223  in my safe, it would be one of my first picks...good shooting...

Do you eat a lot of crow?  How does your wife cook them?  Is it like "ten and twenty blackbirds cooked in a pie"?  Inquiring minds want to know.

This crow, at 311 yards was complacent.  I tagged it with a 204 Ruger.

I think it was four and twenty black birds.  Since crows are a bit larger, I think an even dozen would do it.

I don't know, but if you use a V-max you still might need four & twenty to find enough pieces!  ;D

Merry Christmas

That is some expensive crow bustin :o
We just use .22 LRs. 17 hmr does the job
if they are farther out. Why so much gun?
maybe the explosion of feathers on impact.

That reason plus busting one at 400 yds. would be a little tough for a rimfire. It costs the same as shooting paper.

I'll admit I've never shot a crow in my life...I've always wanted a 223 but never figured out what the heck I would do with it. I knew I didn't want a black rifle or mini 14, nothing against those guys, I'm not Jim Zumbo and I've heard some of them are very accurate. I have friends that literally have dozens of fine ass eotech laden DPMS and Bushys and the like.
I had quite a bit of redundancy in my safe and sold a bunch of rifles that were duplicates in some way or another, but mostly the big and medium bore stuff went but I kept a 444, 300 Wby, my first rifle a 30-06, 30-30, 7mm-08, 260.  I really feel like my shooting improved scaling down and I appreciated what I had left a bit more.  I only got my first "small bore" a while back, a plain jane savage 110 in .243.  the action is herky jerky and the rifle developed surface rust quickly.  while hunting one day I looked down at the rifle in my lap and said to myself, holy crap this trigger guard is plastic.  a small slice with my pocket knife confirmed it. that or the blade on my little case is very hard..  but the rifle will shoot. that is the truth. and I load 80 gr speers that move out.

so back to the 223, it was a stupid title for a thread but I reckon some crows will die.  there will be a good backstop.  I have one stand in a clear cut and they land out there and make a bunch of racket.  I also have another stand in a thicket with a feeder (I have been feeding for over a year trying to get some hogs in).  there are a bunch of raccoons eating all of my corn and I may blast em though I feel sorry for em.  I am also going to try to start coyote hunting.  bottom line, I don't want my hunting to end when deer season is over jan 16.  I've got a lot to learn, trust me.

As far as  the little FN goes I'll let you know how it works out. It was an expensive little bastard but it has a nice trigger, I'll say that. I was just plain 700'd out though there was a nice XCR tactical with a 26" tube here for sale locally that I came close to jumping on.  If the FN turns out to be a overpriced turd I will admit it.  It has a 1 in9 twist and it remains to be seen what projectile this rifle is going to fall in love with.

I put a scope on the rifle a few days ago, a (gasp) Nikon 1.75? x 4.5 that came off one of my 45/70s that I sold.  I shot it yesterday with some monarch brass 55 gr breaking the barrel in and sighting in.  looking at dies and components now.  I've been reloading for twenty years and have never held a small rifle primer in my hand.  the whole microtechnology of loading such a small cartridge is intimidating.  so sorry to ramble, merry christmas guys.

I have heard alot of good things about those rifles. I would not be at all surprised if you wind up
shooting this gun far more than your others & loading the 223 is a snap. I sure like the 60V-Max in my
RRA, but I am going tho try the new 53 V-Max with it's higher BC than the 60 even & vel. I can get
I can't wait.

no, I haven't....I did get a 3.5x10 VariX-III back from Leupold that is going on it.  That was my first Leupold and I had  always heard of the warranty, they fixed it no charge, wow they have a customer for life.  I bought the scope used and it would go out of focus at 8x and above.

then I got a warne mount for it, they are in short supply for some reason, though it appears that Cabelas has plenty for some reason. From the reloaing room perspective  it looks like that through my own best thinking, I've created a youth deer rifle.  I bought 1000 64 gr fusions and I'm loading them with 24.5 gr H4895.  I got a loading tray for the small cases and a Lee dipper set to help with the 25 gr range of charges.    The one time I shot them there was a front moving through with heavy gusts so I didn't take the chrono and I have a feeling they are not moving very fast.

so I'm rambling but I'm going to try some coyote hunting with mouth calls, never have tried but going to this spring.  Overall I'm glad I expanded my arsenal I'm excited my wife and kids can go to the range and have something they like to shoot, its breathed fresh air into my "hobby" for lack of better words.
