Well For heavy bush I like the 35 cal Marlin to tramp through heavy bush or the tikka Battue . The barrel is short and the site picture is quick.
Now this year I got a '06 Remington 7600 pump with an 18 1/2 " barrel. Have not taken it hunting yet , but it seems you got your second load ready to shoot , before you realize the spent cartridge is gone .

Hope to practise with this gun , since I am more used to bolt actions .

The best thing I see is that you seem to be back on target as soon as you chuck a new cartridge in , By having a hold were your pulling slightly back on the forarm, all you need to do is push the forarm forward to load and fire .

That for me will take some practise to get used too, but once learned I bet , it is going to be faster than the lever .
A bush gun in my terms is a short rifle that comes up quick,and one that gets that second shot off just as fast .

  A lot of over bore with an 06 and 18" barrel. My son has a 7600 in 280. Nice gun, fast second shot, acurate but not very light. I had a 760 carbine in 06 I lent my brother, it kicked like a mule and wasn't light. My son uses a Marlin Guide Gun when he hunts the brush but where we hunt we're on the menu. I prefer my Savage 99f in 308. Gun, ammo and scope weigh about 6 lbs. With a 2x7 Leupold I'm ready for 30 feet to 300 yards.
  For Bart Solo's question I'd go as light as I could,  good low powered scope, and not concern myself with a follow-up shot. At close range in brush your not going to get one. All bullets deflect in the brush so heavy thumpers aren't necessary for deer, pratice and familiarity with the rifle is. Thumpers aren't fun to shoot esp. in a light rifle. If he's an occasional shooter with a budget get a Leupold 2x7 though the VXIII in 1.5x5 wll transmit light a little better.  A BLR, Savage 99f, Rem model seven or any other light weight bolts will work. There are some good light single shots out there but I'm not that familiar with them.  I have a NEF Handi rifle and it's not as handi or as light as my Savage.  They do have a 243 super light that I like but I'm not a big fan of .243 for deer.

There are more good rifles out there for what you are looking for than you could look at in a week.  Winchester angle ejects can be scoped, Marlins made since early 50's can be scoped, almost every bolt action maker has short, light weight carbines, just bought a 223 Weatherby
Vanguard on closeout and 15% sale on top of that for $280.00.  Had 2 of the 308's with the same 20" barrel, synthetic stock set up, quick handling buggers.  Pumps are good as well.  You got lots of answers here, start handling rifles and let us know what ya got.  DP

My Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in 9.3x62 is light and powerful and accurate.
Anything that gets away from that is a result of poor aim.

Remington 7600 carbine. Mine is in 308. I never thought I would like a pump, but it has become my favorite hunting rifle. It will reach out too.

Freezer:  I disagree, I think the Remington 600 is a beautiful little carbine.  I love that vented rib.  Yes, I know it serves no purpose, but I think it makes the gun look differant and unique.

 Barbra Streisand's nose makes her different and unique it may even help her vocalize, but I wouldn't want it!  ??? Fact is the 600 is light, shoots good and handles great  ;) I just don't think that ugly ducking will ever be a swan  :-[

Cool stock! Same action was used for the XP 100 target pistol, nuff said.

Freezer:  That rib is plastic, dosen't weigh anything.  I thought it was metal when I bought the gun.  Then after I got it home I discovered it to be plastic.  Oh well, to me it is a good looking gun, and it shoots nice.  Real smooth action, but it has one draw back.  Recoil is horrendious, my other .350 Rem Mag, (Ruger) does not kick half as bad.  It is the hardest kicking gun I have ever shot.  But it is devastating on Bears over bait.

I think the Rem 600 is a Love Hate thing. I also feel it was made way before its time. They were made as a hunters gun not a bench gun. They were light for there time and short which made them a very handy rifle and accurate for a hunting rifle.

My very first hunting rifle was the Remington 600 MoHawk in .243 and it is a tack driver. And I really like the way it looks and handles and shoots.

But I have to say if I could find a decent deal on the Rem 600 in 350 Mag I would jump on one. I like the .35 :)

Hard to beat the often overlooked lowly slug gun. Just a simple pump with a good low power scope.
The win 94 or ruger semi auto in 44 mag. A 240 grain bullet is good woods range deer medicine as well.

Ahhh I seem to recall reading that the rib was a distraction, it was there simply to draw the eyes from the fact that the Remington had a very slim barrel. Remington made some others for the stores to be sold under their names which didn't have the rib but also had heavier profile barrels.

These light guns were never meant to be bench guns. I like the thin barrels. After three shots they heat up quick and poa will change but who needs four fast well placed shots? As for recoil the worst gun I ever shot off a bench was a 94 Win with 180 gr core locks. The short mags were built to provide a light platform with mag performance. Problem is felt recoil goes up with the lighter gun. Good news is I never feel the recoil when I'm shooting at game.

Yea, when the adrennaline is flowing you never feel the shot.  I had laft my thumb on the safety of my old Ruger M-77 with tang safety while shooting a large Moose one year.  Ripped the skin back about 3/4 of an inch.  I never felt it.  I never noticed till the wife asked why I had blood all over my gun and hands.
