Favorite Trout Flies

  We were visiting this morn. in the local fly shop. The discussion came to what flies should a guy have "on his hat" to fish all over the country for trout.
We mainly talked about the west. But if you were picking top performers what would you select?

 I fish quite a few wet flies, most may want to skip that group and just deal with the other three.

 Without a doubt a olive beadhead wooly bugger #14-#10 any where will catch trout.

dry-royal wulff.   irresistable.   black gnat,  spuddler,  yellow wooly bugger, hendrickson light

wet- yellow wooly bugger, black wooly bugger, carey's special, bee pattern

streamer- mickey finn,  rainbow trout, rusty rat (atlantic salmon pattern, works GREAT), maribou muddler, grey ghost, bucktail

Six flies for each style is more than I fish with for trout now

Soft hackle hares ear
Prince nymph
Beadhead wooly bugger

I live in NW IN and go out to Jackson Hole every year.  Either place, here are my go-to flies:

DRY:  Purple Haze, Griffith's gnat, Royal Wulff, Elk Hair Caddis, Yellow Humpy & black ant.
Nymph: Bead head Prince, Pheasant tail, Gold ribbed Hare's Ear, Zug Bug, red copper john or Brassie.
Streamers: Olive, white and black wooly boogers, Purple zonker, Black Bunny leach, olive sculpin

I've fly fished all over Wyoming and Montana and I would never leave home without these:

Elk Hair Caddis
Pheasant Tail
Wooly Bugger

I'm not much help with 6 of each type of fly. I throw streamers 95% of the time.  Most of the time I use a matuka or a slump-buster. I have done very well with crawdad patterns also.

I tie and use only nymphs and crawfish.

I tie a crawfish pattern, on a 3XL hook, in rust and brown/rust in size 10-12-14.

I tie stonefly nymphs in black, dark brown, and rusty brown in 10-12-14 on a 2XL hook.

I tie a mayfly nymph in dark brown, coffee, and rusty dark brown in the same 10-12-14 on a 2XL hook.

These have worked great in the mountain streams of NC and the rivers of Tennessee.

I HAVE FISHED IN MANY STATES IN THIS GREAT COUNTRY,AND HAVE ONLY FISHED FOUR PATTERNS IN ALL OF THEM. FOR A DRY FLY AN ADAMS, FOR A WET A SOFT HACKLE, FOR A NYMPH A MUSKRAT AND FOR A STREAMER A POLAR BEAR THAT I CREATED. THE HARDEST PART OF THE POLAR BEAR IS FINDING THE HAIR. THESE FLIES ARE TIED IN VARIOUS SIZES AS WELL AS THE MUSKRAT IS TIED WEIGHTED. MY FAVOTITE OF THESE FOUR IS THE SOFT HACKLE FISHED AS AN EMERGER. HAVE FUN AND TIGHT LINES.
