9mm on a 1911 frame?
« on: January 22, 2011, 05:40:52 AM »
Does anyone make one? I'm not talking about some double stacked, 20 round job either. I've got smaller hands and don't adapt well to thick grips on a handgun. A standard 1911 in 45acp seems to fit my hands well, but I want lighter recoil in hopes of getting the wife back into shooting.

I know they make 1911s in 38 super but was looking for something cheaper to shoot that I didn't have to worry about chasing down all of my brass to reload. Last box of those(38 super) I bought was as much as 2 boxes of 9mm.
Thanks

HWD

Kimber, Springfield Armory, Rock Island and several others make 9mm 1911s.  The Rock Island starts at under $400.00.  Do a search on Gunbroker for "9mm 1911"...you'll come up with a large number of listings.

I really like the Springfield EMP in 9mm, but it's pricy...over a grand in most configurations.

HAD !?
Lloyd--what did you do with it.
I think you can shoot 9mm in a .38 super.

The 38 Super cartridge is longer (.900 case length, 1.280 overall) and shaped differently than the 9mm (.754 case length, 1.169 overall). The chamber of  is shaped different. The case head is slightly different, too.
To shoot 9x19 you will need a different barrel, magazines (maybe), and a lighter recoil spring (maybe). Might need a different slide; the breechface is shaped to hold the semi-rimmed 38 Super case, and the extractor might not reliably grab the smaller 9x19 rim.

I know it's probably been done, but that don't make it safe or correct.  Semi autos headspace on the case mouth...that in itself would tell you that you can't interchange these two cartridges.
