remington 700 CDL SF in 257 roberts
« on: November 23, 2010, 02:56:52 AM »
Greetings everyone,

Took posession of my new remington 700 last night. Bought it online and a friendly ffl recieved it for me. Only one ffl holder on the island I live on so his help is appreciated.

Anyway my initual impressions are faviorable. The absence of that Jlock is nice, the wood & metal all look nice. And I was especially interested in the new XMark PRO trigger that everyone is complainning about. The one on my rifle is very nice, set about like I like a trigger with no creep and breaks clean. Guess I'm lucky, but I'm happy with it so far.

Now to mount a scope and go shoot it.

Lloyd, where I live there is no place to just go buy most of the shooting items we need, but I did order a set of tally lightweight ring mounts for the rifle. I have a dozen or so scopes laying about to choose one from. I'll let you know when I get it all together and sight it in.
If you have only owned Winchester M70 featherweights then you probably have not had a accurate 257. I know none of the 5 me & my friend ever owned would shoot well. I did have a rem700 before that shot good. It was a heavy gun. I like the weight of this cdl. Hope it shoots good.  ;D.

I owned that featherweight and 3 other 257 rugers and all of them were a chore to get any group under 2 inch out of.

After bedding the action & free floating the barrel mine would shoot into 1&1/2" pretty consistently. My friend tried 4 featherweights before deciding 3" was about the best he was going to get. He loves the style of the featherweights so he kept two of them. One for himself & one he gave his oldest daughter. I did not get good accuracy out of my ruger but I have a browning blr that's shoots acceptable for hunting, not a tact driver but you can kill deer with it. The first Remington shot the best of all the Roberts I've owned but for some unknown reason I sold it. Now I have this cdl. We will see on it....
I've often wondered if it's the caliber or the guns?  ::). My favorite quarter bore is the 250 savage. I've been thinking about a build in that caliber..model 7 action and slightly heavier barrel for a little weight forward. Nice stock. Truth is only God knows what I'll decide to do next. A gun lunies actions defy reason.

I too love the featherweights and wouldnt part with my 280 for anything. No rifle ever fit me better then a featherweight. Mine did about 2.5 at best and i just couldnt get attached to a bolt gun that wouldnt shoot. The problem with the featherweights is they had blocks in the magazine that would only allow bullets to be seated out to about short action lenght and that coupled with a chamber that had an excessively long throat just wasnt the recipe for accuracy. Rugers. I dont have a clue! But then ive stuggled with more bad rugers of every caliber then all the rest of the manufactures combined. contrary to most peoples luck ive allways had better luck with #1s then i have with 77s.  I too am a big fan of 250s. Ive got two rugers a international and a ultralite and a win model 70 lightweight carbine and they all shoot very well. Seems like finding a good 257 has been about like finding the holy grail for me. I think my next try will either be what you have or one of the limited run rem classics or possibly one of the limited run #1as but the former two arent easy to find and when found most people are pretty proud of them. The classic would probably be my best bet. They have the advantage of being a long action.

Hmmm I have no experience with the .257 Roberts but I do wonder at the .25 cals as just over a year ago I acquired a 25-06 and have not taken it hunting as I have not been happy with it's consistancy. Sometimes it will give groups of around 1/2" but mostly around 0.900- 1.125" however I get the odd flier which can open the group up to 2" or sometimes more. I can shoot perhaps 6-10 groups then suddenly this flier appears and I have also noticed that POI can move slightly.

Yes I will be attending to the bedding as it's no longer perfect but this lack of consistancy is bugging me.

Pastorp yes I had considered that but please explain how it only seems to happen with this 25-06 which weighs nearly 11 lbs with scope, Bi-Pod and sound moderator (silencer) fitted? yet shooting factory Federal Fusion 150 Grain ammo in 270 Win through my BSA Majestic Featherweight which only weighs 7 1/2lbs ready to stalk with  ??? This is what I mean on the targets:-

Notice I called and marked the shot I know I pulled slightly.

With the sound moderator fitted.

The moderator is quite heavy and it also acts a bit like a muzzle brake and reduces recoil. With lighter bullets even in the 25-06 is possible to see the bullet hit the target unlike with the moderator removed. Without it fitted the rifle shoots some 2 1/2"high and 2" left from tje POI with the rifle zeroed for the moderator fitted and as I said the bedding on this rifle needs tweaking as the wood has compressed a little over time so it's no longer perfect and that will be rectified next year once I can get around to it as at present I have a rifle build in hand. Precision is not yet up the standard I expect this rifle to deliver so it will not go hunting until it's properly sorted out. We do know that the first 10" of the bore shows heat cracking and crazing as the bore has been scoped so it's had a fair bit of use before I acquired it.

Happy day, my talley ring mounts arrived in the mail today. I mounted a leupold M8, 3x with a duplex reticule in it that was laying about in the gun room.  ;D

Tomorrow if it's not raining I'll go sight it in.

I look forward to hearing how it goes  ;) ................................ Rain! ................... too cold for rain here we have a bit of snow. Only a little unlike parts of the country and where I used to live until 5 years ago it seems they have about 18" of snow. We have a couple that's all but this morning it's freezing fog and a Hoar frost which means I'll wager our road is an ice sheet.

We have enjoyed a couple of snows too already and I noticed fresh snow on the mountains around our village. Its been really windy and rainy this fall. The storms just keep rolling in one after another. We average over 150" of rain a year so we qualify as rain forest but its colder than most rain forests. Our temps are between high teens and high 30s this time of year. colder between storms and warmer in the stormy weather.

The terain goes from sea level straight up to the mountain peaks here in SE alaska. It can be rainning at sea level and snowing on the mountains around us at the same time. We get a lot of fog as well but not so much this time of year. Anyway it could rain or snow several times on any given day. Yesterday afternoon was mostly clear. We will see what today brings. Its my day off so I can do as I please today, and it would please me to sight in my new rifle..  ;D

I was not able to get out friday, not feeling very good, but did load up some more amo for the 257 bob. New cases primed with cci LR standard primers and 42.5 gr of AA 4350 powder, toped with a sierra 117gr pro hunter. ( use at your own risk )

Saturday late afternoon I did go out and rough site the rifle to get it on the paper but darkness didn't let me shoot it much. I havent shot it for group yet but will soon.

Hope you feel better soon.

We had rain yesterday and over night it froze and it has not got above freezing today. The rain wa snot enough to clear the snow off properly I think the ground was too cold for that to happen.

I have owned four .25-06 and one .257  Roberts.  Of those I still have two .25-06 and the Roberts.  The .257 Roberts is currently my most consistant and "go to" sporter weight centerfire.  I do have a .270 Win Rem 700 sporter that shoots really well, but it's not outshooting the Roberts.  Of the .25-06s the 700 is in the shop for a new extractor and the 7600 is awaiting a scope mounting base; the stuff I had originally purchased did not work out.  So, for those two, I don't know how well they will shoot.  As I get older, my capablilty to hold a rifle still has suffered and my eyesight has deteriorated.  I can shoot the Roberts still into about 1" at 100yds, and my oldest son shoots it into bugholes at the same distance on the same day with the same loads.  So, even though that aggravates me, I still like the rifle a lot.

Now the two .25-06s that I don't still own were both good shooters with the Rem 700 BDL being a fine shooting sporter and the Ruger #1 shot well, but not as good as the Remmy.  I liked both of them so well, that I doubt that I'll ever not own a .25-06 as long as I can still handle a rifle and see to shoot it.

I haven't been able to do anymore testing of the Remington 257R, I'm stuck in Anchorage for medical. Cartoid artery blocked but now there is a problem with my heart. This getting older isn't as much fun as I thought it would be. My warnity must have expired. Guess the doctors will get it sorted out with Gods help. But in the meantime here I sit. At least I'm with my kids & grandkids that live here in Anchorage.

Weather much different than southeast Alaska. It was -14 yesterday morning. Afraid to look this morning. It's so dry I thought I was back in new Mexico.  ;D. I think I like Southeast Alaska better than south central.

You all have a merry Christmas & a blessed new year !

Thanks guys, hope they get this all straightened out soon. Christmas is ok since most of our kids & grandkids live here in anchorage. That's the main reason I insisted on coming here rather than Seattle for treatment. No family in Seattle.

Brit, I hope your dad will be able to join you for Christmas. Hospitals are no place to celebrate the Christmas holidays.

Whatever happens I will be thankful to God for the gift of his son to us as our lord and redeemer. I can celebrate this gift wherever I am at. After all Jesus is the reason for the season.   ;D

Merry Christmas to you all, and Gods riches blessing in the coming year.

Well they moved dad to the cottage Hospital which is in another town a bit nearer and he should be home for Christmas day at least even if he has to go back again for more treatment. That's how it stands today. But it's fluid and things can change so fingers crossed and ahve a good Christmas your self.

Well I'm alive. Barely, after all the tests were finished the docs decided I needed 4 bypasses and my cartoid artery cleaned out.  ::) quite a bit more than I planned on. I may get out of the hospital tomorrow. I'm really weak. Gotta go now.  Keep me in prayer.

Well I got out of the hospital Jan. 7th. It seems I picked up some sort of infection in the hospital and am just now starting to feel like doing anything. The docs have been giving me strong antibiotics. They are fine ally knocking it out. I'm actually starting to enjoy my daily walks.
I get to fly home on the 27th. Won't be able to shoot for a while. So the 257 will need to wait. At least I'm alive and starting to feel like I'll make it. Thanks for all the prayers,
