Henry Varmit Express 17 HMR
« on: May 31, 2009, 02:07:02 PM »
Greeting Gents,
New member here and this is my first post.
I've been away from guns since the brown shoe army days and just recently aquired two rifles, a Ruger 243 Hawkeye and the Henry 17 HMR H001V.  Set up a shooting bench and target holders in the east pasture and having a great time blasting away.  The Ruger came first.  With a Nikon 3-9-40 scope, it's driving nails at 100 yds.
Now for the Henry.
About 60 rounds through the Henry, so far and since round #1 it has a consistent hang up problem when feeding rounds with the lever action.  The rounds hang up just before entering the chamber, requiring  the lever to be moved back in the eject direction and trying again.  The round usually enters the chamber smoothly on the second try.  The action is very smooth when not actually feeding cartridges.
The problem exists whether using Hornady or CCI ammo.  Haven't tried Winchester yet.
Has anyone experienced with this problem on Henry lever action 17 HMRs and if so, how did you cure it?
Today, I emailed Henry about it and am awaiting their response.
Thanks

Henry did not respond to my request for advice regarding the cartridge hangup problem on my Varmint Express.  Fortunately, with use the problem seems to be correcting itself.  After spending some time just feeding and ejecting rounds at a fairly rapid rate,  the frequency of hangups has dropped from over 90% of rounds fed to only occasionally.  Hangup occurs mostly when the lever is operated slowly.  I guess the feed mechanism just needs to wear in.

Sonuvagun, You can not expect to operate any lever action rifle slowly and have it function properly. It does not have to be lightning quick like CASS shooters do, but you do need to operate the lever firmly and fairly fast. Try that and I think you will see much better results. God Bless.
