Broken lug
« on: January 27, 2011, 09:30:52 PM »
My friends dog knocked his Savage 24 over and the barrel lug snapped off intact, at the solder joint, with the fore grip still attached.A sad day for him.  :'(  So far he has not found a smith around vancouver,WAwho wants to touch it, and hasn't looked in Portland,OR yet. Has anybody here had experience with this type of thing and knows how to repair it?  I was thinking a few small TIG spot type welds would work without distorting the shottie barrel too much. Would he be better off contacting Savage? I told him I would ask the experts. Any advice ill be greatly appreciated by him, and I will certainly let him know where the info came from. Thanks in advance.

I had to modify/add a lug on one of my O/U barrel sets --- I cut out the lug using an existing one as a template and my smith just silver soldered it on--i suggest you clean the base of the lug and the spot on the barrel where it sits--remove any old weld material and find a good solderer.
