What scope should I chose?

I have a 14" MGM 22 k -Hornet in need of a new scope. I was leaning toward a Burris 3-12 but after reading some posts I was thinking about a rifle scope for it. I want more magnification and a larger objective, which one would be best in a hunting situation on woodchucks and crows?

       Which scope to use(rifle or handgun)to me is a function of the position I'll be shooting from.  I shoot a Hornet w/ rifle scope from what I'll call my turkey hunting position.  My butt planted at the base of a big white oak with my knees up in my face and the grip of my Contender(pistol) in either hand(depending on which way I'm facing...left or right)up tight against my chest just under my chin and the off hand holding the forend, barrel and/or scope with the elbow of the off hand tight to my ribs or knee...depending on elevation of whatever is approaching. With my head bent over slightly, my eye is just about right for the eye relief of most rifle scopes.  Works good for me.  Also use this method a good deal for squirrel hunting.
       Most of my crow and ground hog shootin' would be from a prone or more relaxed sitting position with my arms extended and using a bi-pod, tri-pod or other rest of some sort.  Here I much prefer a long eye relief scope.  There now...I think I've muddied-up the water quite enough.

As an old school handgun hunter and long range hunter since the late 60's I only put IER/EER scopes on handguns, and wouldn't even consider a rifle scope even on the light/no recoil cartridges.   Just personal choice.

Your 22KH will do just fine to some suprising long ranges with a Burris 3-12.   I've used a bunch of them, as well 3-9's, 2-7's and 10X, 7X and 5X Burris target scopes over the years for long range predator and varmint hunting, including for some very small squirrels.   When the range gets long the 3-12 and 10X Target work fine, but if you go with a 10XT try to find one of their older model's of it.    The newer 10XT's don't have as long of eye relief or as good of exit pupil as the older ones did.   Easy to tell apart, the old models were an inch to two longer than the new models.

For hunting situations the burris 2 x 7 or leupold 2.5 x 8 eer are awesome.   The fixed optics are good too but don't have the versitility of the variables.  The 3 x 12 burris is great for targets and rodents at a distance if you have a solid rest.  Just buy good glass and you will be happy

What should I expect to pay for a used Burris 3-12?

The 3-12 will do anything the lower power variables will do, plus a lot more, so IMO it's a better buy for the money.

Hard to say on the used scopes as there are too many factors that play a roll on pricing.   So prices on used can be from very reasonable to almost new cost depending on them.   Last Burris 3-12 I bought was in 2003, a Target Gloss AO Fine Plex w/target knobs, and it cost me $283 back then.    Never got around to using it so it sits still new in box.   As a discontinued model there's no valid price comparison for it now though.

I just picked up a slightly used Burris 3x12x32mm Fine Plex - PA Handgun Scope with Target Knobs off of another forum for $275.00. As Ladobe stated this version is no longer available but the other 3x12x's I have looked at are over $400.00 new most places.

A good friend of mine just picked up a slightly used 3x12x32mm Burris with the Ballistic Plex Reticle off of another forum for the same $275.00.

I have tried Riflescopes on Rimfire Contenders and to be honest I must just be set in my ways as I much prefer a good Handgun Scope. Even shooting from the bench I never did get comfortable shooting a Handgun with a Riflescope.

I have used 3x12x Burris Handgun Scopes ever since there have been Burris 3x12x Handgun Scopes. I have used them for Coyotes, on Prairie Dog Shoots and shooting other assorted varmints as well as Target Shooting. I've never used a 10x Burris Handgun Scope and to be honest as long as the 3x12x Burris Handgun Scopes are available I probably won't either.
