Another Choice For Deer Season
« on: February 18, 2011, 03:04:52 PM »
Got my new 41 mag carbine Contender barrel today.  Also got a 41 mag carbine Encore barrel for my wife.

It does really complicate those early mornings in deer season though trying to decide what to take, Marlin 41 mag, Contender 41 mag, Winchester 44 mag, or one of the handguns like 44 mag, 375 Win or 41 mag, 45-70.

Not sure why I need so many different guns to hunt a deer, but aint America great to have choices.  One thing I do know for sure is that my slug barrel will probably be in the back of the safe for a long time.

I have a similar problem, if you call it that. I have a 45LC Handi rifle, 44 Ruger Deerfield Carbine, Encore 357 Max, 20ga slug barrel for my Win 1200, and a Knight 50cal ML rifle. All for deer hunting. ::) What's wrong with me?!

Thanks, Dinny

You guys are as bad as me.

I could take out:

.357 max Encore
.357 max Handi
.357 max Handi shorty
.44 mag Handi
Remington 870 12 gauge cantilever barrel
Remington 870 12 gauge smooth bore slug barrel
Marlin 512 bolt action fully rifled slug barrel
2- H&R 20 gauge fully rifled

Almost forgot my Muzzleloader. Optima Pro Elite (I think that is what it is called  :o ) in .50 cal.

And these are just my Indiana legal guns with scopes on them.  :)

I haven't shot the Encore max yet. Pretty sweet set-up. Walnut stocks, Leupold base and rings, Nikon 2-7 scope, 18" MGM stainless barrel. I have 50 rounds loaded up for it and ready to test.  ;)

I admire your problems and your choice of the 41 mag.

My favorite deer guns are S&W 657 PC hunter and Marlin lever both in 41 mag.

OK, I read some more of the posts and realize it is a time to brag about Indiana hunting iron.

In pistol I could use my:

Smith Wesson 4 inch Model 28 in 357.

Smith Wesson 4 or 6 inch 868 in 357.

Smith Wesson 5 inch model 60 in 357.

Smith Wesson 6 inch model 25 in 45 Colt.

Smith Wesson 4,5 or 6 inch model 29 or 629 in 44 mag.

Smith Wesson, 4, 6 or 8-3/8 inch model 57 or 657 in 41 mag.

DAN Wesson, 8 inch 357 max.

Contender, 30-30, 357 max

Encore, 41 mag, 25-06, 50 x 209.

These are the handgun calibers.  Notice I favor Smith and Wesson.

Lately I have come to favor the 41 mag in my Marlin 1894 lever gun.

My current project is an AR 458 socom, this will be a lot of fun.

Hurry up deer season.

My kids make my choices easy. They all raid the gun cabnet and I choose from what is left over ;)
My go to last year and probably for many years to come H&R .357 maximum
But we do have other options
Contender super 14 .357 maxi
H&R .44
H&R 20 Ultra Slug
Knight Disc
H&R 20 shorty smooth slug
Mossy's in 12(many deer to it credit)  20 and 410(dont start)

I do have issues choosing, even with my small amount of choices. I have been known to pack 2 long guns at a time.  ::)
