Hi standard sentinel 9 shot revolver. I have owned 3 over the years with never a problem.They come in different barrel lengths and you can pick up used ones in good shape from $150.00. The one I have now has a 2" bbl and it is my ccw and plinker pistol. Very accurate and smooth. Just my opinion.

R/E your statement about the p-22 slide failures, I would be curious what sources and facts you base that statement on.  I am asking only because I bought one back when they first came out, and put a lot of rounds thru it without a problem.  Gave it to a retired friend a couple years ago who was having a hard time with the recoil of centerfires.  He shoots at least a brick a week thru it at his backyard range without issue.  I wouldn't even want to guess how many rounds thru that gun, but it would be a good advertisment for Walther, like those old million mile Toyota adds.   By the way, I bought another one, and it seems fine, witrh a lot less rounds thru it...

TeamNelson; Have you put the new springs in yet? If not you should go for it . It is an easy little chore that takes little time to do. I can't remember the pull weights but unloading the little gun in double action as fast as you can is llike shooting an auto-loader. Single action on mine is so light and crisp that I warn others that shoot it. The trigger rebound spring is the one that needs to be replaced the most, with the lightest one in the kit, ( if you get more than one). I had to go with the medium weight spring for the hammer cause I got misfires with the light one. The light rebound spring is what really makes the difference. I was forturnate to get a good early plain barrel 94 4'' stainless  and I love it. I found a nice old Safariland holster for the S&W kit gun in a box at the gun shop for 15 bucks. Forward angle open top with a snap strap, I'm good to go! You probably know this but HKS makes a speed loader that works perfect for the 94. It was originally made for the old H&R nine shooters. Gotta have a couple. GOD BLESS!!!!!!! Have fun!!!!

Saddlebum, no I haven't. Thanks for bringing it up. I posted over on the Taurus thread about it, looking for a recommendation. I've found elsewhere that Wolffe makes a small frame kit, which I'll give a try.

Another vote for the Tuarus M94

1. Just bought one my self 5" ss $329 shoots great
2. Taurus M990 also a great choice but its a large frame(I'm considering one of these also
3. Taurus M991 in 22mag also a great shooter
4. Ruger single six will always own one but I like the Taurus better
5. S&W k22 I also want one but like you I do not want to shell out $750 for it, I can buy 2 Taurus for that. BUT I will probable get one eventually anyway, I can always get mo money back.
6. Ruger semi auto's great guns, Have a MK11 and a MK111 in 22/45 (actually their are my oldest sons I bought them for him and they are both really good shooters

Of course I have 357, 44 mag and 45LC but I am a 22 fanatic cant have too many guns in my book, and I dont have time to list rifles.

I didn't think to bring up the K 22 S&W because I think of them as being over priced for what we are discussing. But another poster said he got one for 350.00 which is a great buy these days. Another guy mentioned his M 17. So I guess I should put in my two cents worth on the K 22. In my opinion they are the masterpiece of 22 revolvers. Since it is possible to find a good deal on a used one, they should be disscused here, if you can find one for around your price range. Good luck! I don't mean to make you drool but I was fortunate to stumble on an early post-war model,(1946-1958), in a pawn shop. Some nut literally SLOPPED paint all over the front and rear sights. I guess to make them more visible. It looked really bad. It had a Pachmayer grip on it. The guy wanted 400.00 for it. After I explained to him how uncollectable it was because of paint and grip and blueing wear,(not that bad), he let me have it for 200.00. It cleaned up nice and I put a pair of '80s style S&W target grips on it for 10.00. It's more of a shooter than a collector, but a good example of possibly the finest 22 revolver ever made, IMO. The point here is, if you find a deal on one JUMP ON IT!!!

My next handgun purchase will be for my wife, a new shooter, and it will be a Ruger Bearcat. I just checked prices for Ruger 22 at Bud'sgunshop.com and found the Bearcats at around $390. The Ruger Mk III at just under $280 is another excellent choice. The Taurus Mod. 94 was around $300+ and also a good choice. What it will boil down to is what you feel best about; single or double action or auto. (BTW for new shooters consider the strength needed to use the gun; my wife had difficulty cycling my MkII's bolt, so a revolver is best for her).

mdi, that's a great point. neither my wife nor my daughter could easily rack the slide on most of the semis I've owned. If I stay out and just watch, they will invariably reach for the lever, bolt rifles, or the SA/DA revolvers, which said it all for me. They also have both experienced some limp-wristed shooting, stovepiping and trying to clear a weapons with a slide they have difficulty managing in the first place. My daughter put a few mags through my 1911 with a .22 slide last trip out, of her own volition, but the slide on that is effortless.

But some DA triggers particularly on .22s are pretty tough for them to squeeze and fire accurately. Invariably they wind up pulling it if its too heavy. Again, just watching what they naturally tend to, they'll thumb the hammer back for the lighter SA trigger pull because it gives them greater assurance for accuracy. So your choice of a bearcat for a new lady shooter shows a lot of wisdom to my mind. :thumbs up:

If you are interested in going the single action route the EAA Bounty Hunter is a real sweet gun.
I have a blue 8 shot one with a 4.5 inch barrel. It is my favorite 22 pistol that I own. I got
it for $269 with shipping on Gunbroker.com.

I don't know about the other 22lr autos but the buckmark has one flaw I'm aware of now (that I've put 3-400 rounds through it)

the screws that keep the slide together, one of mine backed out today while shooting!  the think kept goofing up and jamming or failing to eject at the end of the range session.  maybe that's because I'm afraid of overtightening the screws, maybe it's the gun?  (side note, I'm known for "brute force and ignorance" at work for snapping allen wrenches and stripping out threaded holes so maybe I just babied the gun too much).  anyone else had issues with the screws coming loose?

no, I have not.

I have had the same problems with over tightening.  My solution was to get one of the torc screwdrivers--I think the one I got is called the fat wrench.  It keeps you from striping or breaking screws.  A drop of the non-permanent lock tight my solve your problem as well.

Definitely go for a High Standard. Look for any of the models made in Hamden Ct. The Sport King is the most common, and probably the cheapest, however there are a lot of Trophy target models "out there" that probably offer the best bang for your buck of any semi-auto .22.

The Hamden pistols were made in the 60's and 70's by real gunsmith craftsmen who took pride in their work The fit, finish and accuracy of their pistols cannot be economically duplicated today.

Unfortunately, the E. Hartford High Standards are much lower quality, made during High Standard's bitter end in the early 80's.

Not yet; took her apart, cleaned it up. Then put in snap caps and pulled the trigger a few hundred times.
Took her shooting 2 weeks ago, much improved but still may go with springs. Thanks for checking back!

Bought my daughter a 4 inch 94 a little over a year ago, smoothed up the action a bit and got the single action pull down to 4 lbs. We have been very pleased with the accuracy and function. I have 2 model 17 Smiths and while there is no comparrison as to overall quality I would not hesitate to buy another 94.

I have owned a bunch of 22's including Browning Buck Mark's, Berretta's, Ruger Mark II and III, S & W, H & R and more.
I keep coming back to the Ruger Mark II's however.  There are a lot of reasons but mostly because I like their reliability,
parts availability etc. 
In response to Jamesrus' post, if you find a very good or excellent condition Mark II with a box for less than $225, buy it.
Most in that kind of condition are more expensive than the new 22/45's.  The demand for really nice Mark II's is high.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I have a Taurus 94 2"" that is accurate
enough for executing tin cans and such. My Wife shoots it well, single or
double action. I have drilled her in rapid fire double action shooting, don't
want to upset her if she has that one in her hand.

This is a technical point, and not all that valuable, but pot metal is zinc.  The frames are a good alloy aluminum.  I did quite a bit of consulting for one of the foundries that made the frames for S&W, and they were quite particular about the material that went into their parts.

That said, I didn't buy one but got a Buckmark.  I will never part with that one.  And one of the reasons I got it was the steel instead of the alloy.
   I have a 22A and my buddy bought one a yr after I got mine .Neither one of us have had a lick of trouble with 'em. i put a dot site on the 5.5" bbl and bought 4" just for field carry .like fishing etc. If I'm gonna fall into the creek better with  $200 gun than a $600 one, the triggers aren't really bad for the money and get better. most of the bad press is on guys new out of the box guns with no break in. some it seems need a little wear in time.I like mine .It's been a tuff little trouble free cheap S&W and i never thought those two words would fit together. ~~MM~~
