Build a replica WWII M2 BP mortar for golf balls
« on: September 12, 2011, 03:09:49 PM »
Was wondering if there are any plans for building the barrel to be used for making a replica WWII M2 or M19 mortar with a black powder barrel that will shoot golf balls or maybe one that would do tennis balls? I have very little knowledge on cannons or mortars so help would be appreciated. I have seen a couple of these mortars on various videos but there is little info associated with them. Have heard about using seamless pipe but am not sure where to get it or what ID, OD and wall thickness to use. Also, info on the interior design for the combustion chamber?  Thanks for any help.  Mike

Subject matter here is limited to pre-1898 (GCA68) designs so you won't find anything like that.  But they are pretty simple so you should be able to figure one out without too much help as long as you don't get carried away with the powder.  Look for 4130 seamless tubing.

This subject  is way out of topic for the Black powder mortar and cannon forum.  We only discuss pre 1899 cannons and mortars and replica's there of.  The Stokes style mortar is specifically identified as off topic on GBO BPM&C in our forum rules.

The building of a Stokes style mortar even a muzzle-loading black powder golf ball type may be restricted by ATF.  The only way to find out is to ask them.  Any other opinion given is not valid and will not serve in your defense in court.  We have been told by many that it is perfectly alright to build one of these as long as it is muzzle-loading.  We have a standing offer on BPM&C for anyone to produce a determination letter from ATF saying these are acceptable to build. No one yet has produce such a letter.

I will move this post to exotic weapons...
