15" 45/70 Encore
« on: December 28, 2003, 12:55:53 AM »
I have an Encore with SS 26" 22-250 and Blued 24" 30/06 barrels. I absolutely love the gun. The 22/250 is the most accurate I have ever owned.
I gave myself a 15" 45/70 barrel and walnut grip/forend for Christmas. The recoil is a bit more than I anticipated even when loaded at minimum with 300gr HP. I can deal with the kick into my hand but not the 1/4 inch patch of skin that the lower right edge of the frame removed from the side of my index finger. The smooth walnut grip did not help so I tried a friend's rubber grip. It was better but still hit my finger. I think most of the problem is that the grips are too large for my hand.
Are smaller grips available? If not, I have no use for an Encore in pistol form.

You might contact Old Georgia Jim for a set of grips.

Thanks.

I sent an e-mail regarding Encore grips. His site lists only Contender grips at this time.

if you have a stainless frame then take some sand paper and sand down the lower edge.if you look at it,it is very sharp and all you have to do is dull it down.another trick i use wth the big ones is on the finger i put a patch folded and then tape it to my finger.    wade

The frame is stainless. I thought about rounding the corner of the frame. I couldn't bring myself to do it without trying to find smaller a grip first. I may do it anyway.
I did apply a couple layers of clothe and electrical tape over the bandaid. I wish this would have occurred to me while I still had skin on my finger.

if you do both sides of the frame no one will ever till.i have shot a lot of big kickers and dulling the side of the frame did a great job.375/06JDJ,50AE,280JDJ,30/06,and now a 416 rem mag from SSK.the frame would take skin off of my trigger finger and the trigger guard takes skin off my other forefinger right at the second joint.it looked like i had been in a fight by the time i got home.plus the first time out with the 375/06JDJ the grip is the one with the insert in it,it took out a big chunk meat from my hand in between my thumb and trigger finger.
