No luck for me this ML season. Went to 4 different stands, all were hot spots in the past few years, two of which have continuous supplemental feeders. Didn't see a deer over the last 3 days.

I am starting to regret the does and small 8 pt. I passed up on early in the bow season...you know what they say don't ever let a deer pass by today that you would surely take on the last day!  Still maybe the 8 pt. will be a bit bigger next fall....

I don't know about everybody else but it's been one of the best years I've ever had hunting in Ohio 24yr's, I got a nice 10pt bow hunting in late Oct,on the same trip dropped a coyote, and I filled my tag during fall turkey. Today I got a nice freezer doe with a 45 Knight Disc Extreme I just bought on GBO. Tonight we're going out dog hunting over the gut pile I left, they should be moving with the snow coming tomorrow.

Just read in the local newspaper that hunting licence sales were at a 23 year high for the 09-10 season. I was surprised it wasn't on the ODNR web page. Anyway It said thats bucking the national trend and that sales have declined in 33 states. The credit for the increase was given to out of state hunters and kids. They sold over 34,000 non resident licence which was an 8% increase and they credit that to the trophy deer here. As of Dec. 14 sales were down 3.37% this year but they expect that to climb because of the muzzleloader and archery seasons. I know it went up by 1 late last year because my middle grandson passed the hunter safety course and I took him out during Christmas break.

I guess the best news is the kids are hunting again. Last year the youth sales were over 51,000. I'm looking forward to the turkey season now when I'll have two of those youth with me. I've gotta admit over the last few years I've put more effort into taking the oldest grandson hunting than taking myself. Not a complaint by the way.....

Thanks for that BB! The truth is I'm the lucky one.  My huntin' was alone for a couple of years except for the youth season.  All of my hunting partners quit huntin' or they're dead. Hope I don't quit till I'm dead! Anyway I still go out a bit by myself but haven't taken the 2 and 3 day or week long hunts like before. I enjoyed 'em but it's a lot more fun with those kids!

Thanks again for that Shanner! Normally I would say perfect granddad but truth is he has a flaw that I haven’t been able to fix  :-[. A perfect granddad would have it done by now. I don’t like to talk about it in public too much but I don’t know you guys well enough to lie to you……not yet anyway. No it’s not the braggin’ either. He just started that in November. He’s not real good at it yet but it’s easy to see he’s gettin’ better. Especially when he starts workin’ on his dad. I think he’s just tryin’ to goad his old man into huntin’ with us a bit more. I don’t know if it will happen but its easy to see he’s getting’ under his skin  ;D…..Its not the lying’ either. I’m sure he’ll get better. Anyway I’ve worked on it pretty hard. Hard enough to cost us a half day of huntin’ and stayin’ in the cabin a few times. I've lectured him and gave sermon like speeches but..... Yep…..you guessed it....He’s a ……uhhh… a Michigan fan!  >:(  Until this year the OSU vs. Michigan game fell during the youth season.. We had some pretty good battles over it but I can’t seem to teach him or change his mind, he just can’t recognize what a real football team looks like……..But he’s young.. I don't think I'll have that problem with the middle grandson ;)

Just havin' some fun there and I'm proud of those grandsons for sure, but I don't wanna highjack this thread talkin' about 'em. I thought it was interesting when Jal5 mentioned that licence sales were down.

total deer kill for the gun week is down 8%and the number of hunting licenses sold is down too, I forget by how much.
He also wondered about the reason for the drop. There's also been speculation in this thread about the drop in the deer kill. Is there a drop in the herd size? is it due to coyotes? disease? Less hunters? Made me wonder if maybe if it was due to the inexperience of so many new hunters or out of state hunters with limited time and familiarity with their area.

Just saw the West Virginia deer kill was down by 32% in 2010. They blame the weather..

I finally filled a tag tonite. Hunted at my friends property the one who built a house there this year late summer, fall. Number of deer seen there was down but they probably went nocturnal with the construction judging by the tracks in the snow all over the food plots. Shot a medium sized doe late this afternoon. Four does came in to the food plot scratching up the turnips covered by snow. I think this winter will be hard on the deer mortality again.
