Scale recommendations?
« on: February 04, 2011, 08:49:35 AM »
I'd like to buy a scale for measuring out BP and was wondering if any of you had a recommendation? Have any of you bought a scale that if it broke you'd buy the same one, no questions asked? I'd hate to buy something that I wont like and end up having to buy a different one down the road. My price range is around $70 and would like it to measure into the hundredths.

Thanks,
Aaron

... and would like it to measure into the hundredths.

Hundredths of what?  Grams?  Black powder doesn't require the same accuracy as smokeless (tenths of grains.)

Most powder scales measure to tenths of a grain.  Which scale to get will depend on the largest charge you want to load.  I wouldn't get a scale of less than 500 grain capacity , and 1000 grain capacity would be better. RCBS, Pacific, Lyman all good stuff.

Look right here on GBO classifieds for some good deals.  http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/board,244.0.html  An RCBS 505 scale just sold for $50 post paid.  GBO classifieds are very active and you have to be quick.  Check there daily or more.

You can also check Ebay and Gunbroker.com.

I just checked all three.  Most people are selling stuff there like they are a big time retailer and price acording ly, but keep you eye open there are bargains.

I'm not sure I guess. When I was looking at the digital scales at Scheels they all said accurate to .1 and I don't recall if it was grams or grains. I thought I had seen a scale that measured to .01 last year when I bought my first scale for my mortar. Figured the more accurate the better. The scale I bought is just to bulky and is starting to give me problems.

Thanks, I'll be sure to get one with 1000 grain capacity.

Finding them isn't so much my problem as making sure I get the right one.

One gram weighs 15.43 grains, so a tenth of a gram is 1.5 grains and that is plenty close enough for weighing black powder for cannons of significant size.  If you need a greater capacity than a typical smokeless scale, .1 grams will be close enough if you're measuring black powder.

I have a Ohaus penny weight scale that measures in grams, ounces and penny weight.  It is left over form my misspent youth when I had a jewelery store.  I would buy it again.
