Which one
« on: April 10, 2012, 04:12:41 PM »
Today I looked at two Marlin 1894 cowboy limited rifles in .44 mag., with 24" barrels. One is unfired, with no box excellent condition, serial #03xxxxx. $799 price tag. The other is in used very good condition, it has a shiny finish on the wood and drilled and tapped for a tang sight for $599. Which one to buy.

In a situation like you described, my budget usually makes the decision for me. Whichever one you pick, make sure it will feed ammo without jamming. If this is not possible before the purchase, I would insist on a written return privelege if the one purchased does not feed. I have a standard 1894 44Mag and it is great, hope you get one.

No box, to me does not mean unfired to me.
and without the box I would not pay the new gun price.

I bought the older of the two and never looked back. Someone did an action job on it and that trigger is sweet, as smooth as glass.

Hope you spent the other 200.00 on ammo or bullets and brass.  Those pistol shootin Marlins get pretty hungry and chew through a lot of ammo!  Congrats on your Marlin.  DP

Imagine running into two of my Marlin Owners brothers over here. Thanks for the replies. DT she shoots good but I am having a small issue with the trigger but nothing I can't fix fairly reasonably with a little help from you guys. Yes DP I know how hungry these things can get, I haven't reloaded in quite awhile but I'm getting ready to start the old special 3 back up.
