696 44 Special
« on: December 04, 2010, 10:13:58 AM »
I don't buy a lot of stainless S&Ws but I have been carrying a 686 Custom service over run (3" round but) for some time. I had a chance at a 696. which is a 3", L framed 5 shot 44 Special, and bought it. It came from an auction, sight unseen. Turned out it was unfired and in it's box. It is no longer unfired and I was pleased with how it shot. I could hit a 12" square gong at 80 yards with most every shot. This was with a 240 grain cast swc. I am a 44 special fan and this one fits the Cyclone holster I have. Shotgunner

I been playing with the 44special loads in my 44mag at first.  I been thinking of a snubbie in 44 special too.

I realize that when i reload the 44mag and the 44 special withy cast bullets i get better preformance with the 44 special over the 44mag using the same powder charge.  Now i load all my 44 special and my 38 special with cast bullets and save the longer mag cases for magnum loads.

This short 44 has become my every day carry gun. I have a bunch of federal 200 SWCHP factory loads but am going to try the Hornady Gold Dots. A 240 SWC makes a good load for around the farm and in the woods. It fits the Bianchi Cyclone that I wore the 686 in. Might do something about a set of special grips, boot grips maybe. Shotgunner

Congrats.
I wrote S&W and speced out the gun two years before it came out.  S&W used 95% of what I spec'd in my letter and somehow I have never been able to find one when I had $.
