advice on used H & R 20 guage
« on: February 05, 2011, 12:38:01 PM »
I am torn between ordering a 20 ga barrel to fit my pardner combo or purchasing a used 20 ga here in my home town. The used gun is not in as good as shape as mine but has a full choke 3 in  barrel. it is an older gun........not rusted but kind of rusty looking and when you break it open it is a little loose? better off to order the barrel or buy this one for $90 and have it finished out as a turkey gun?

A loose barrel isn't an issue if it's tight when the action is closed with the forend removed, if it's loose locked up without the forend, it needs to be shimmed. See forend fit in the FAQs to fix the loose when broke open issue.  But I wouldn't spend $90 on a used one unless it was like new, brand spanking new Pardners sell for $120 here, on sale for $100 a couple times a year at the local chain store.

Or you could get a used barrel from here on the classified for much less than $90 and fit it your self might even get lucky and have it lock right up like it was made for your frame.

Thing is, its hard finding a 20 ga full choke at retail - most are modified.  Buying a barrel from H&R/Rem will be over $100 with 2-way shipping.  I would not be afraid of local gun you describe, but $75 seems more in line.

For all the hassle you're better off buying a new one. Like Tim said a brand new 20ga. can be had for 120 bucks or less. It doesn't really make sense to use the barrel program for regular Pardner barrels, it's just easier to buy a new one.

I've bought two at pawn shops in the last year.  Both were 90+%.  First was $75, second had lam youth stock for $90.  Typical price in my area.  Houston, TX.
