new model 1894 marlin peep sight
« on: December 05, 2003, 01:52:07 AM »
I would like to mount a receiver sight on this model rifle.  I don't see any screw holes on the side of the receiver, just my scope base holes on top.  What options do I have?  Has anyone done this on this rifle?  Thanks.

Williams Guide Receiver Sight comes to mind.  Call Williams at 1-800-530-9028 and they should be able to tell you which one you need.  Their catalog only shows the Foolproof or 5D but if you explain that Marlin doesn't have the mounting holes for those any more they should be able to set you up.

My local gun shop  ordered me a Lyman 66 for my rifle . I also ordered a Hi-Viz front sight. I could not get any info on the Williams sight.

Williams told me that the marlin 336 1894 and 1895 all use the same sight. They said the foolproof 336  or wgrf 336 will work on any of these rifles.

That's what I have mounted on mine.  There are two screw holes on the left side to the receiver that it mounts to.  Mine is a 1894P model but all the ones I've seen have the side holes.  I play around with lot of different loads and installed the target knobs to make adjustment easier.

go through that again. I have a 1894p and just ordered a lyman reciever sight. The only place I see to mount this is on the, top 4 small screws for a scope mount I assume. Am I missing something as I have no place to mount a sight to the left side?

If you use the Williams Foolproof you will have to get the receiver drilled & tapped to mount it.  If you get the Williams WGRS it sits on top of the receiver and uses the scope base mounting screws.

This is how mine is mounted.  One of the mounting screws is visible below the sight adjustment lock screw and the other is under the vertical adjustment slide.  The screw hole are plugged just like the ones on the top of the receiver.  This is how the rifle came from out of the factory box.   I hope this helps.

Marlin stopped drilling and tapping the side of the reciever a couple years ago. The Lyman side mount is a little nicer than the Williams, finer easier adjustments, and it's steel not aluminum, but you would have to drill and tap for it. I use the XS reciever sight that mount in the top rear holes. It's a great sight, streamlined, tough.

I have a 1894p Marlin with no holes for a reciever sight to be mounted on th left side. So what brand, model are recommending for a top mounted reciever sight?

I just ordered a Williams 5D-336 receiver sight from Midway for my 1894CP that uses the two back holes in the top of the receiver for mounting. I know the sight says 336 but I read where the hole spacing is the same for all centerfires. In fact I think in Midway's technical specifications they listed that fact. The product number for that sight is 774488. Just go to www.midwayusa.com and check it out. The price for that sight is $31.07 by the way. Hope this helps.

Jim, the XS sight systems peep mount at the top rear of the receiver. All marlins, exept the cowboys, have these holes.

I talked to a Marlin rep today on what they recomend for reciever sights for a 1894p, which is not drilled and tapped on the left side. The rep informed me they quit d&t in production 2 Years ago, and their recommendation for sights was Lyman and Williams. Now I have encountered horror stories of Lyman's customer service and they told me if I wanted a Lyman rec. sight for my Marlin I would have to have it d&p.
I contacted Williams and the person I talked to was helpful and said they were caught off guard by this move by Marlin and have produced 3 new rec. sights for Marlin, and would mail the stats pronto.
As newbe to levers my habidts of burying my cheek on a bolt action stock and looking into the scope are not going to change, as I understand you have to lift your head to the ghost ring.

My 1894 cp-357 XS peep sights are only 1/8" above the original open sights. I had to replace the front sight with the one provided by XS. No noticable difference in cheek placement. Faster and more accurate than buckhorns, tougher than a scope (less ugly too). On a previous levergun, a rossi '92, I had my local machinist drill and tap for lymans(I believe its the same for williams) and it was done quicly and cheaply. later on I dropped that rifle and it landed right on the lyman sight. It bent slightly, but didn't break. It just needed to be re-sighted. The williams sight is cast aluminum, and I think it would have broken had it taken that hit. Both of the side mount types have faster and easier adjustments than the top mount XS, good for different loads- I had my Lyman marked out for 38's and 357's, very precise and repeatable. I think you would be happy if you had it d&t'd. Then get a lyman or williams, they might even be lower than the XS. Good luck!
